I say go for it, protect her, nicely, and be ready to offer alternatives of do as she requests.

 

Only problem I can see with this is that if he is controlling, letting him do the asking is pointless, as she will say yes to a party because he will push her into it.

 

If I were the OP, I'd just go to mom, tell her what is transpiring, try to find out for sure if she would be up to it or not, then do my best to make sure it doesn't happen, should that be her choice.

 

I think mom is put between a rock and a hard place, assuming her husband is the controlling type, and this party will happen for her to keep the peace.
