I'd blow the whistle regardless who, how old, what color.
Stealing is stealing.

While I'd never condone approaching someone personally, to not alert a store manager as to what one sees, is simply excusing the bad behavior, and adds to not only the cost of what we all pay for merchandise, but contributes to the increasing entitlement attitude of this nation. "If I want it I'll get it, even if I'm not due it, or haven't earned it".

No one is watching customers. Those cameras are not live, they just record. If I see someone stealing food I look the other way for a couple reasons. One, hunger makes people do things they wouldn't ordinarily do. Two, a desperate person might be carrying a weapon. I go about my business.
There's a way to report it, without the shoplifter knowing.
Yes @missy1, there is indeed. But it seems that would take some courage that some posters here don't have.
When these people MYOB they forget they are involving ALL of us, in more crime and higher prices. Gee, thanks for that.

I've never seen anyone shoplift.
But I think I would say something to store management if I did.

I have worked in retail and you can't say anything until they are out the door.
This is the way it was back in the days when I worked retail.
I think a lot of posters are missing the point that you don't approach the 'theif' yourself, and by reporting to management, they may keep an eye on the customer, now and in the future, even if they don't bust them at this particular time.
It often took us quite awhile to actually 'catch' someone. We knew they got away with a lot before we could pin them down, but observant customers telling us, helped us on the way to stopping it.

I did actually see someone shoplifting. I was in JCP. They had a bunch of mens folded jeans stacked on a square table back in a corner where the jeans are in bins against the walls. I was looking down when I saw two young men putting jeans under their coats. I was not looking at them, my side vision could see them. I looked up and my eyes met one guys eyes and it was really scary for me. I turned and started walking away and the two guys followed me. I'm not sure how long they followed me because for a while I could "feel" them following me but I was too scared to look back. That JCP was in a mall. So when I left the store I immediately went in another and they were not following me by then.
So that time I was too scared because they saw me see them. Those two guys literally looked like they could have had a knife on them or something. So no I just wanted to get out of that situation fast!

I am going to comment before I read any other comments.
My first thought is that I would just look away. I do not condone shoplifting by any means, But, I am not being paid in a store to be their security person to turn others in. I do not want the drama or the stress of being apart of someone elses problem. I have enough of my stresses to deal with.
I mind my own business and do not want to be involved in someone elses crimnial activity. I am not a Gladys Kiavitz.
This is just my feelings on someone stealing something... it is their Karma not mine.

THIS IS WHY I WOULD CHOOSE TO NOT GET INVOLVED....

You do not have to walk out the store doors to get busted for shoplifting. I know someone whose son was caught shoplifting and he hadn't left the store. But he had walked past all registers and they caught him as he was headed towards the doors.
Many stores have security in plain clothes walking around. You think they are regular shoppers but they are watching for shoplifters. Some stores have cameras and a team of people in another room watching live what is happening on those cameras.
I'm not sure what I would do. We have a Kohls in my area that has a huge theft problem. It is so bad, they have threatened to close the store if they can't get it under control. It would be a shame to me if the store closes for that reason.
I also know that while that store has security in it, they are not supposed to chase a shoplifter out of the store for safety reasons. They are supposed to call the police.

When my children were young i took a part time job in a major dept store and took care of the dressing rooms, made sure the floor items were neat and presentable and was also responsible while on the floor to observe any shoptlifting(security position)......so i was reporting when i saw it happen.....
Although it hasn't happened that i have seen someone do that years later.....i would STILL report it..........old or young....
