I wouldn't do a thing, regardless of who's doing the pilfering...

It's not my role nor my responsibility and really, my perspective is most of us have enough on our plates managing our own day to day existence...

I did actually see someone shoplifting.  I was in JCP.  They had a bunch of mens folded jeans stacked on a square table back in a corner where the jeans are in bins against the walls.  I was looking down when I saw two young men putting jeans under their coats.  I was not looking at them, my side vision could see them.  I looked up and my eyes met one guys eyes and it was really scary for me.  I turned and started walking away and the two guys followed me.   I'm not sure how long they followed me because for a while I could "feel" them following me but I was too scared to look back.  That JCP was in a mall.  So when I left the store I immediately went in another and they were not following me by then.

So that time I was too scared because they saw me see them.  Those two guys literally looked like they could have had  a knife on them or something.  So no I just wanted to get out of that situation fast!

Even if  you didn't say something, they will still possibly think so.  That's why I use my judgement when I do tell the manager/employee.

Most of the thefts are from employees.

I've seen a few replies on here that are rather self-righteous ..... IMO, MYOB isn't a bad policy.   Stores have security cameras and loss prevention employees.    Let them do their jobs.

People who steal may be very desperate .... crazy .... or both!    They may also be armed and willing to shoot or stab an interfering customer to create a diversion while escaping!

Where would your attention go .... to someone running away, or to a customer bleeding all over the floor?

I have seen this and reported it to a worker in the store.

ITA.  As far as I'm concerned, an item is not stolen until its walked past the cash register. It's not up to me to decide if someone has the intent to walk out the door with a product.  There are professionals for that.

You have sacrificed nothing and no one.
