For my son, I had a seamstress make him an original Batman outfit (the Batman from the TV series.) He had the tights, cape, and all the accessories. She suggested making a second larger pair of shorts so that he could wear it another year. He loved it!
My favorite for myself was a last minute rental during college. It was a saloon girl dress with feathers around the neckline and for my hair. It fit perfectly, and I got loads of compliments. I have never worn a scary costume.

When I was young, I went as a "cigar-cigarette girl.". I wore like a leotard and had a skimpy short skirt, almost like a tutu. Then around my neck I had a strapped box that I wore that contained, well, cigars and cigarettes. Lol. I believe the cigarettes were of the candy variety. But I looked like the girls you might see in the movies walking around a casino or something selling them. 🎰🚬🎃

When our sons were seven and three I made them gray mouse costumes with big ears that were pink on the inside!
The year before they were red satin devils.

I was a bride one year. I was 8 or 9. My aunt made my costume out of her wedding gown and veil.

@QVCkitty1 , When you mentioned your mom making your costume out of an old drape, I immediately thought of Carol Burnett Gone with the Wind.

@PA Mom-mom wrote:@ninjawife My DD, from the time she was 3 years old, wanted to be a princess, or a bride, or a fairy princess, or a fairy princess bride. I sewed each costume from scratch, including that green velvet, long sleeved princess dress with the huge conical headdress. When she was in second grade, she and her friends decided they were going to create coordinating outfits. That outfit and every outfit she created after that is my favorite!
@PA Mom-mom Same with my DD! One year when she was four or five I made from scratch a sparkly pink princess outfit with a rhinestone tiara and fairy wings.
One ouf our neighbors commented on how adorable she looked and DD folded her arms acrosss her chest and insisted that she wss not adorable but she was pretty!
Funny how much she loved being a pink princes or bride at that age!

When my daughter was a year old, I made a pumpkin costume for her. She looked real cute in it sitting up. She was not walking yet. Next year made a clown outfit, after that she told me what she was going to be.
I always enjoyed wearing a friend's high school football referee uniform he grew out of years ago.
My Cruella Deville is my all time favorite.
I am going to be Liz Cheney this year. I already have the hair, glasses and should be able to pull out an old suit I wore to work before I retired.🧙🏻♀️🎃👻

I never had good costumes growing up, and I don't really do anything complicated as an adult. I did do a really good skeleton face a few years ago and then wore a black cape wiith the hoodie on my head. I thought that was pretty impressive.
I've made and/or had a few interesting skating costumes though.

I truthfully can't think of a favorite costume as a child. We mainly had to use sheets --- to make ghosts -- and old clothing to rig up other things.
As a young teen, I remember we were having a Halloween party/dance at the junior high school and prizes were going to be handed out -- such as funniest, scariest, etc.
My Mom was a really good seamstress and she made me a beautiful Little Red Riding Hood outfit. It has a hood, cape and a little dirndle skirt with the straps on it! I wore anklets and little black flats and had my hair in pigtails, and carried a little basket. I won prize for prettiest! I was so proud! Oddly enough, I have no memory of what I won --- probably wasn't much. But, I had never won anything before so that was the most important thing to me!
