My very nice neighbor came over and offered to clean my flower beds.  I said sure.  He is a nice guy.....has lived behind me for 20 yrs. He did a good job.  He's my kids' age.

My question.......should I compensate him? or not?  I know he doesn't want or expect anything, but I feel kinda guilty not giving him anything.  Really am stumped by this.

Maybe I should wait and see what happens next year?

How nice! I don't know about money but maybe a gift card from Amazon along with a thank you note.

How long did it take him to do the flower beds??  If it was a quick job, probably nothing.  But if it took him several hours, I would give him something.  Do you bake?  A book by a favorite author?  I wouldn't give him money but something that he would enjoy.

Re: What to give........

You bet I would give him something.

Anyone who would save me all the time it would take me to clean my flower beds. I would generously compensate him. And hope he would do it again and again next year.

PS - Just wanted to mention this. It was mentioned to bake or cook something. I just think of my son and his food preferences. He is SOOO particular about what he will eat. It is easier to make a list of what he will eat because making a list of what he won't eat would be too long.

Gift certificates for fast food restaurants will work.

I think a gift card is a great idea, especially the Amazon suggestion, so he can spend the money as he wishes. If you know he buys Starbucks, that could be an idea. What a kind neighbor.

@Patriot3  What a nice guy! Is he single? If so, he might appreciate a meal delivered to his doorstep. If he has family, a plate of cookies would be good.  I guess it depends on what you know about him. Does he like wine? Maybe he would appreciate you offering to take in his mail or trash cans the next time he is out of town. Maybe you could just send him a thank you note with a gift card for a coffee place.

I would definitely give him an Amazon card or a gas card.  He took the time to clean them.  Maybe he will offer next year.  Kind neighbor.

I would give him some kind of thank you gift.  Good suggestions given.  I would give something you like to bake.  Banana bread comes to mind.

Gift card for coffee is a great Idea. Dunkin, Starbucks, etc.
