Maybe it's just me but I cannot imagine going to a family celebration and showing up with only a card.

In my religion, when someone receives a Sacrament, it is an event. In our family events usually mean gifts. I know this is true for other families too.

It depends on how close you are to the family/child. My son received a cross from his godmother..and a pewter canister to store his baptismal certificate in. Money from his godfather and other family members...oh and a beautiful nursery rhyme book signed and dated from his grandmother who is no longer with us.....all priceless and thoughtful gifts.

I think a nicely bound child's Bible is something he/she could grow into.
