Re: What to do with Hummels?

* * * * U P D A T E * * * *

In case anyone is still interested, I just dropped off my mom's collection at I Sold It At eBay.  Lovely woman and very knowledgeable about Hummels.  We both agreed not to expect too much for the majority of them but her eyes did light up for some of them so I am very pleased.  If there is one in your area I would give them a call.

@Mary Bailey thank you so much for your suggestion my friend!  Smiley Happy

It is beyond painful to ask this question but I have tried to ensure that my mom's beloved Hummel collection goes to a good home with no positive results.  As time is ticking I am planning on donating her collection to a charity.  I always assumed they would find a good and happy home so this is hard for me.

I guess my question is, how does one value a large collection?  The majority of her figurines come from Germany and are many decades old but I cannot find anyone that would appreciate them.  If you know someone that would be interested in having them I would love to hear from you!

Any assistance will be gratefully appreciated!

I sold antiques for years and even though the collectibles market has taken a nose dive in the last nearly 20 years, it has not passed away!

Your dear Mother's Hummels are worth quite a bit, even the newer ones, but especially the older ones as they are far rarer for having made it to now without cracks and breaks, as well as some of them being very limited.  I am not a Hummel expert by any means and I know it will be difficult to find a buyer for the entire collection, but they are out there with some effort.  And selling them individually on eBay might be very successful for you.

IF you decide to donate her beautiful collection, make sure to note how much (approximately) the value is at donation and include it in your income tax.  Good luck.... Woman LOL

Let's not be ridiculous here.

I am 62 and I don't care for Hummels or Precious Moments or Lladro or other "collectible" items at all.  Never have and none of my friends have these things either.  If one finds them attractive, that's fine but it's certainly not a generational thing that requires you to appreciate kitschy collectibles.

My nieces and nephews are of the age group you so disparage and their houses are probably cleaner than yours.  This animosity toward those younger is so toxic and so rooted in false information.  There are good and bad people in every generation. I refuse to enter my elderly years with such a chip on my shoulder.

There are many magazines for collectors of various "collectibles".    Do some googling and see what comes up.

I just looked on Ebay and found 40,000+ active auctions for Hummel figurines, some prices are definitely quite inflated.

This may be one of those things with just more sentimental value than cash value.

My niece by marriage just had her second baby, now she has two girls under five and she just loves collecting those Snowbaby little figurines! They make her happy.  And she's proud of her home and takes very good care of it.... and believe it or not, so does her bachelor brother!  Woman LOL

Re: What to do with Hummels?

Collectibles are a very personal thing and I have no problem at all when one generation has no interest in carrying a collection forward but for those that would like to ensure a loved one's collection is handled well (and like me are not interested in getting involved with eBay) this was a great option.

Right now I have a ton of vinyls (LP's) that if I can't find someone to take they will be in a dumpster next week . . . it hurts but life goes on . . . Smiley Happy

@Tinkrbl44 God bless you for your post but I am just not an eBay person so I was grateful to find this outlet that would help me.  When she was looking through the various Hummels and remarking on the trademarks and other things I could feel a headache starting so it is well worth her commission to do the research, post and fulfill the transaction as I know I would fold 10 minutes into the process.  I also don't do well at garage sales unless someone else is running them, I guess I am not a salesmen at heart and after spending the last two weeks gathering up my possessions packing isn't my strong suit either . . . Oh thanks @CLEM!  Please know it's not so much about the money but that they went to someone that would enjoy them as much as my mom did.  I was so relieved when I left that nice lady's house knowing she knew what she was doing and would find them a good home . . . Smiley Happy

It really meant a lot to me that she recognized the older, more valuable Hummels.  She really knows what she is doing!
