In my eyes, an Olympic gold medal is an Olympic gold medal. I doubt anyone who's won a team gold would be less proud than one who's won an individual medal.
Just because one doesn't like a particular sport doesn't mean it's ridiculous. I don't particularly care for the biathlon but I won't make fun of it nor those who participate in it or enjoy watching.
A host country cannot just add an event. There are a number of criteria established by the IOC that must be met before an event is added.

If I went to the Olympics to win an individual gold and won a gold in a made up team event, I would not feel the same joy. Who said anything about biahlon? That's a legit Olympic sport. You certainly can't compare biathlon with halfpipe. I'm betting half the young toughs in my neighborhood alone could do the same tricks they can. Just isn't anything special. In my eyes, an Olympic gold medal is an Olympic gold medal. I doubt anyone who's won a team gold would be less proud than one who's won an individual medal.

I used biathlon as an example. And, if half the young toughs in your neighborhood could do the same tricks, you must have an extremely talented group of youths around you.
A sport does NOT have to have my approval to be legitimate and part of the Olympics.

Have any of you been watching the Team Ice Skating Competition?
It has been wonderful to see the individual skaters perform and for them to have their team mates in the "Kiss and Cry" area supporting them. The commentators, former Olympians themselves, have marveled at the camaraderie engendered in a sport that usually is a bit contentious even among the same nation's competitors (Think Tanya/Nancy or "The Cutting Edge").
I'm sure it will boost TV ratings, but it has also given viewers a chance to get to know the different competitors before the individual events. It also gives some skaters a chance at a Medal when they aren't the top in their particular discipline. It evens the playing field where one country might excel in Dance but not Men's Singles, for example. I think it is a great addition.

Ok, maybe I didn't say that quite right. Let me try again.
What I meant was, some countries concentrate more on certain disciplines. Canada might be better in dance, Russia in Pairs, etc. By having all disciplines included in one event, it creates a new environment where everyone has to excel to help each other. Like any team sport, everyone works their hardest to win and if one person or pair doesn't have their best day, another must then work harder to pick them up.
It's called TEAM WORK. If one person on a relay runs a slow leg, the next guy tries harder. You don't then turn around and tell the first guy that even though we came in first, you won't get a medal.
It has always been a part of SPORTS, just not Figure Skating.
