Contributing the maximum allowed amount to my retirement plan. I had planned to work until I was 70 but had to retire early at 62. I had much less than I wanted in the account but you never know what life is going to bring you or how your plans might change. I'm glad I was prepared as much as I could be.

Giving my life to Christ. What a friend he has been to me. Someone who loves me unconditionally and is teaching me how to love others. He is my counselor and my guide.

I agree. I started contributing the max right when I got out of college. I've continued to do that. I don't want to be elderly and not be able to pay my bills or travel.
Other smart choices...marrying the man I did, staying in the industry that I'm in.

Started a 'cottage industry' of buying beach cottages, first with cash as no bank would give me a mortgage on my P/T pay, without my husbands co-signature.
In all-- I've purchased 9, but currently own five. Two are rentals, one we're re-habbing, and two we enjoy.
No education beyond high school, no real estate license, no longer need a co-signer, and no boss in over 14 years.

We have a whole house natural gas run generator too. We had it installed post Irene after a lot of damage to our finished basement. It was a GREAT investment, ITA.

Being without power for 2 weeks in the cold days of late October/early November were not fun at all. We no longer have places to stay (relatives) and that forced our hand to get a generator.

From 1986 until 2001, I got involved in buying and selling houses trying to make money. Unfortunately, the market crashed in 1989 and I had a "mini-breakdown" and was almost homeless as I had very little money left and had no one to help me or anywhere to go. In 1999 I worked for a mean company where I injured my back - so I sued them - and I won a big settlement. That allowed me to buy my brand new beautiful house in north Oxnard, CA. I got back on my feet - and have been supporting my friend's daughter get through college - in Chicago. She graduates in May, 2016 and she majored in American Sign Language and will be a liaison for the Deaf Community - probably in Portland, Oregon.
I have survived many years of being penniless and I also survived ovarian cancer, stage 3, in 2006. To everyone who is also going throught financial problems, medical problems, etc. --- fight on!!!!!
