What's the best way to get rid of fleas?

I have a 4 month old half schnauzer terrier and am a first time pet owner. He has fleas. Has been around no other animals but has been in the yard. Vet treated him about 2 weeks ago and thought they were gone but today saw some more. He has on a flea collar. What do you use that has been helpful.
