Re: What's Wrong with People?

I read this story earlier and was absolutely appalled. As a species we are just spiraling downward.

The people who did not help shame on them. When I say help I mean calling  911.

Thank God for the Transit employee who boarded the train.

DISGUSTING!!

How horrific for that young woman.  Thankfully, the rapist was arrested, but shame on anyone on that train who saw and did nothing.  I do believe that most people are in their own worlds when using public transport today, because people are on their phone and have ear buds in with loud music.  However, there were people on that train who did not want to get involved.

At some point, we have to turn a corner and stop with the violence and name-calling that our society seems to thrive on.  As we get older, we should all be very concerned as to what is happening, not just for ourselves, but for our families.  As DH and I think about downsizing, we are hesitant to leave our current home because our neighbors are wonderful and I feel very safe here.  I wonder how long that will last and whether any place that we move to will be safe.

@SXMGirl    I feel the same way , at least for now I tell my husband we are probsnly safe    But for how long as no place will be safe !   Scary stuff .   Things have to change or I fear we will be like that movie The Purge ,  now that is very scary and not out if the realm of what we could be dealing with at some point.

I just read the story. The entire rape is caught on surveillance tape. The police confirm there were many people in the position to get help yet none did. It is sickening, and shows how detached we are from one another.

@manny2 And it shows that civic responsibility does not exist any more and we don't expect much from our citizens.  In the past, it would have been Un American to stand by, and today we don't have that sense of responsibility.

Thank you, I knew there had been a case in New York, in that case I believe people even heard her scream and did nothing.

@rms1954   There is a huge difference between the initial shock of witnessing a brutal crime and filming the incident on a cell phone.

Re: What's Wrong with People?

Remember this happened in August 2020, a man was arrested after he allegedly attempted to rape a woman in a subway station in Manhattan, but was interrupted by a Good Samaritan.

NBC news- Man arrested after brazen attempt to rape woman on New York subway platform

Police arrested a man on Sunday who allegedly attempted to rape a woman in a Manhattan subway station, a moment captured in a startling video that appeared to show him commit the act midday on Saturday.

Jose Reyes, 31, was arrested Sunday afternoon in East Harlem, police said, after attacking a 25-year-old woman who had exited the train at 11 a.m. Reyes allegedly followed her and then attacked her on the subway platform, bringing her to the ground.

"This heinous and horrendous act was interrupted by a good Samaritan who observed and got him to cease his behavior while subsequently videotaping the incident," said New York Police Department Chief of Detectives Rodney Harrison.

The video showed Reyes on top of the unidentified woman thrusting his body on her, and police said he punched the woman and threw her to the floor. Numerous people witnessed the event.

The video of Reyes went viral on Saturday, as police asked for any tips that would help identify Reyes and lead to his arrest. Police said that the video, as well as three other tips, were "very instrumental in apprehending our individual."

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which operates the New York City subway, said they were appalled to see the video and helped police to identify the suspect.

"This is disturbing and disgraceful. No one should ever have to experience this type of horrific attack in the transit system," Abbey Collins, a spokesperson for the MTA, told NBC NY prior to Reyes' arrest.

@Cakers3 Again, we have lost any sense of responsibility as citizens to others or to our country.  It's a me me me world.

@Pearlee Everyone thought someone else would call as I remember.

@mspatmac   That case is cited in psychology texts as an example of the bystander effect and diffusion of responsibility.

Human beings are a lot like sheep, and most would like to think they have more integrity than the next flock member, but that's usually not the case.  Humans are mostly just going along with what everyone else is doing.

It is important for everyone to learn about this unsavory aspect of human psychology, and to make a conscious decision that they will not be someone who does nothing when something is wrong.
