I am the OP, I'm kind of sorry for starting this thread, I thought it was an opportunity to be able to speak lovingly of our mothers, I am saddened that for some of you it brought up hurtful feelings, I'm sorry.

I have to keep telling myself that her missteps as a mom happened when she was in her immature 20's and not knowing many things about parenting. Her skills improved as she got older but oddly enough my memories keep reverting back to those earlier times though I fight it like the dickens internally to forget it and love the person she became.

What she taught me at a very early age. Independence, count only on yourself.

I was too young when she died always hits me.

I was 29 and now 82. I have already lived almost 12 years longer than my mom. My feeling is very close to yours.

Good for you! I did pretty much the same. Didn't get to go to college; I left and have been self-supporting since I was 19 and I'm 71 now. It was such a relief not to be around that harridan and I made sure she never got to be in my son's life and mess it up the was she did mine.

@GoneButNotForgotten - I completely understand. My mom died a year ago in April. I had been without contact with her for 31 years. The day after I got the call a feeling of relief came over me because I knew I protected my son from her abuse and because I knew I had my son's life different than the life I had growing up.
