Re: What's A Smell That Evokes a Memory

@panda1234   My grandmother wore Chanel # 5. We would go to her house for Christmas dinner. When she hugged me I could smell Chanel.
I wear Chanel in November and December to make it seem like Christmas.
White shoulders reminds me of Summer.

Re: What's A Smell That Evokes a Memory

@NewNickname1x1000  Thank you so much for mentioning the powder!!!👍 That was another pleasant memory just now!😊 I can still see, and smell the fragrant light powder permeating the air, as she would sit at her vanity, and dust herself with the puff! Occasionally, I would  sneak into her bedroom; we were not allowed in without permission; and repeat her perfumed ritual! I felt SO grown up, and really thought I was  "getting away" with it. She was OBVIOUSLY aware, because I am now certain she could see and smell it on me, yet NEVER said a word.😁

Re: What's A Smell That Evokes a Memory

@NewNickname1x1000  As it's already been said, what a great and sweetly nostalgic topic....

So many come to mind....

As a child.... Opening up a fresh container of Play-Doh,

Smelling just passed out mimeograph\ditto machine papers in school with the purplish blue ink,

Smelling my grandmother's dusting powder that was on her vanity,

The scent in the master bathroom after my dad showered using a bar of Ivory soap and Head and Shoulders shampoo that was sold in a jar with a creamy texture.

And of course the smell of his Old Spice, the obligatory gift from a child to their dad.  LOL

My mom smelling of Heaven Scent that came in a small perfume balm container.

As a teen I remember the clean smell in the laundry room after my mom did a load of laundry.  Smelled like Tide and Clorox.  Love the smell of fresh sheets on the clothes line drying in the sunlight.

Also loved the tell tale scent of Pine-Sol as you knew the house was clean.

Freshly cleaned kitchen cabinets courtesy of Jubilee.

Loved when my grandmothers and mother made fresh ciabatta bread in the oven.  And them simmering homemade spaghetti sauce with meatballs, sausage and rolled pork skins in the pot.

The scent of Sea & Ski, Coppertone and Hawaiin Tropic on the beach.  We'd smell like a Mounds bar.

After I had my children, I would love the smell of anything Johnson & Johnson including baby powder, lotion, oil and bar soap.  I also love the scent of the Royal Violets cologne I would put on my daughter's hair.

Sorry it's so long.....🤷

I would give everything I own just to have you back again.......David Gates of Bread

Re: What's A Smell That Evokes a Memory

Peonies blooming in spring in my grandmother's garden as well as my mom's - such a sweet scent. Also, pipe tobacco from grandfather's pipe. And as already mentioned, the smell of permanent wave solution! My mom had a small beauty shop in a separate part of our home when I was growing up and even though it was a strong odor, I can almost still smell it and see her working on the ladies in our neighborhood - giving them those curls in the 50s, and all of them laughing and chatting the whole time. Nice memories!

Re: What's A Smell That Evokes a Memory

@NewNickname1x1000  Good question! In no particular order:

  • Apple Pie coming out of the oven
  • Honeysuckle - dad would take us driving to smell it as payment for doing working in the garden
  • Car air fresheners shaped like a pine tree - I remember green, blue and pink.
  • DDT - Dad made it "snow" on any given Saturday morning
  • Horse sweat - they should bottle it!
  • The scent of Viburnum Carlesii drifting through the kitchen window

Re: What's A Smell That Evokes a Memory

@NewNickname1x1000 My mom wore Sand & Sable when she worked at Zenith in Chicago or Youth Dew back in the 60's and early 70's.  At some point, I can remember she wore Windsong, and finally Tova's Body, Mind and Spirit in the 80's.  As a matter of fact, I still have an unused bottle of Tova she "saved."  I can spritz a little in the air and it is like she has enveloped me in a hug!
