My mom REFUSED to have either a computer or cell phone. Simply would NOT hear of it. Later in life she admitted she missed out on so much by not having the computer. And both of us were pioneers in the business and begged her to let us get her one.
@Sooner My mom had a cell phone for use in the car for emergencies. She wouldn't have anything to do with computers and was proud to announce that she didn't. She had no problem asking me to go online and find information for her. I tried to convince her to step into this century but she had no interest. She didn't know how to use a vcr. Her major technical accomplishment was knowing how to use the microwave.
This is my mom as well. She will be 80 in a few weeks, and many people her age do buy into the technology and love it.
We got her a basic flip phone, and she hated it. She will never consider a computer. She has absolutely no need for one. She has no interest in learning how to use one or pay the money for one and the internet service. She finds out what she needs to know from books the tv or radio. If she is really wanting some research on something, she calls me or my brother.
I see no reason, for someone at that stage of life, who has never learned to embrace the new technology, to do so now. As long as she has someone in the family who will assist her with what she needs or wants in relation to that technology. It would simply cause undue stress in her life, and at 80, who needs that?
I don't think of most of the 80 year olds I know as being too old to stop living and moving forward and being excited about things that have potential to help us or entertain or inform us. When my dad was 86 he was up on all the newest things from car engines to everything. I know 90 year olds who are eager to learn new things. Just depends.
The point I was trying to make is that if someone is at 80 or so and older, and they don't want to embrace the new technology, what is the point of fighting it? Why add stresses to their (and your) life, by pushing it on them, making them frustrated or angered because they are unwilling to take on another new thing they find no value in.
They will easily be able to live out the rest of their lives without having to personally use any of it, if that is their wish.
But I guess some people think that if it is available, everyone must learn it, embrace it, use it and love it. My opinion is they don't. And it doesn't make them 'unable to move forward'. It is about choices, instead of being forced to do what everyone else is.

Internet though? Ha ha! I guess how would one know about Armageddon then?
Hmm. I have never described myself in the words you posted, perhaps you are confused?

Air conditioner...not in the house or in the car. We have one small window air conditioner stuck away in a closet. We never use it, but we live in Northern Wisconsin.
I just purchased a smart phone, which I have no idea how to use at this point...so I'm still in the dark ages when it comes to phones.
We do not have an ice maker in the fridge. In fact, we rarely ever even make ice.
We do not have any of the super expensive appliances that are "trending" these days...juicer, ninjas, air fryer, etc. We do have an old fashioned blender that is around 50 years old...still works great on the rare occasion that we use it. I'm not a gadget person...just more to clean.

LOL...so do I! When we bought our home, dishwasher was included. It seemed silly for just 2 people, then later our child to use it. We used it for a while (like every 2-3 days) then we thought...why bother? So we no longer use it. My sister thinks we're crazy....

Modern convenieces give me more time to do what I like to do.
I don't want to slave over laundry or washing dishes or not getting a good night's sleep because of not having AC.

For the record, I just have a cell phone. NOT a smart phone. Though I keep thinking of getting one. The problem is the monthly fee, eating up data consently and charging it up every night. Not a convience by any strech of the imagination.

I have a dumb phone. Only because I rarely use it. If I needed a smart phone, I would have one. I am at the age where I like my comforts and can afford them, so I have ac, ice maker in freezer, dishwasher, landscaper,tv,etc, etc.
Everyone is different as can be seen in all of the posts on this thread. I think that is wonderful. We can't all be the same thank goodness. I enjoyed reading what everyone had to say. I would never question them if I didn't agree.

So, how did you find this forum?
She has internet access. My daughter also doesn't have cable, but has internet included in her apartment lease.
@september, iI don't think Lila was talking about Internet access...just that it's hard to imagine somebody without a TV seeking out the website (and forum section) for a television shopping network
Not impossible, but at least unlikely. I don't watch QVC at all but found the forums when I was doing some product research. I only knew about the product from having seen the infomercial though!

LOL, you have it backwards...in your analogy, shampoo is the modern convenience. There is nothing modern (nor convenient!) about co-washing ![]()
