Although my phone has the capabiliies to text, take photos, get on the internet, I ONLY use mine to make and receive actual calls---- ![]()
No ice maker on my fridge---those I know that have them always seem to be complaining about them not working and is need of a repair...
And I have an "old fashion" top loading washing machine, instead of the "modern" HE Washers---although they save energy and water I heard there are smelly washer problems( mold, mildew, and unpleasant orders) long washing times etc etc....
But I could NEVER live without air conditioning here in Texas!!! God Bless the inventor!

@VanSleepy One funny story about Siri--- I was at my sister's house with some friends and my sis was battling bronchitis and was complaining that the medication that the doctor gave her wasn't helping, however, since she was allergic to so many medications this was one of the few available.......all of a sudden SIRI started talking and called her by name and told her to ask her doctor to consider prescribing....and Siri named a medication. My sister thought that was creepy she had left her phone on in a different part of the room, and it was like Siri had turned into a human---my sis thought it was so creepy she disabled Siri---LOL!!!

We have many nice things in our life...but we save and pay in cash for them and not over extend ourselves. We also hang onto things for many...many years...like cars and TV's.
@croemer I'm with ya on the A/C (also live in Texas).....![]()

I do NOT download music! I prefer records and cds. I did have an iPod long long ago but its buried in a drawer!
There is nothing like the sound of a vinyl record on the stereo. And with records and cds I prefer to have the sleeves, info, etc. and the music in my hands to play on our stereo system!
Boy you and I differ on that! LOL!!! I can remember nearly crying for joy the first time I heard a cd with piano music on it. It sounded like the piano was in the room to me! I like music without the pops or tape hiss from my growing up years! I'm also lazy and a Bluetooth speaker and device suits me to a t!
But, if that's what you love, enjoy your vinyl! And the cover art!

My feeling is that I live in 2016 not 1916 and if I can afford and enjoy the modern conveniences why not have them. I like my A/C, DVR, Iphone, Ipad, automatic car, diswasher, etc. It's sounds like you're bragging that you can live without it, well good for you. I washed and dried dishes when I was a kid and believe me, I don't miss it. We did without a lot of things that I enjoy today.

Fun thread!
No ice maker other than myself.
No garbage disposal.

I don't think anyone here is "bragging" about doing without some things. I think it's more about considering what we have available to us today that our grandparents, & in some cases, parents, never dreamed of. My dad, who passed too young in 1981, would have loved having a giant tv screen to watch his football every weekend & holiday.

I just purchased a smart phone, which I have no idea how to use at this point...so I'm still in the dark ages when it comes to phones.
We do not have an ice maker in the fridge. In fact, we rarely ever even make ice.
We do not have any of the super expensive appliances that are "trending" these days...juicer, ninjas, air fryer, etc. We do have an old fashioned blender that is around 50 years old...still works great on the rare occasion that we use it. I'm not a gadget person...just more to clean.
LOL!!! ICE is a HUGE thing at our house! We've even thought about a separate ice machine. We drink lots of unsweet and ICE is a must! I order extra ice when I order tea out! The people at the local Sonic know my voice: "I want a large unsweet tea with EXTRA ice!"

Right now the one modern convenience I'm living without is storage space. I know we don't really think of that as a modern convenience, but my current summer apartment reminds me of the old (built in the 1890's) house in which I grew up. There's no large closet, just 2 little ones. There's no pantry, no linen closet, no medicine cabinet - and little wall space. Obviously, those who lived in these spaces didn't own so much.
Of the gadgets I think OP really meant, the ones I don't have that I think I might one day buy are all car related or maybe just a car with all the safety gadgets - gps, back-up camera, park assist, bluetooth, and anything else I don't even know I want!
