What 'modern conveniences' do you live without?

I sometimes shake my head when I think of all the things we have today that we consider 'necessary'. I think back to what my great grandparents had available to them, when they married in about 1905, and compare that with all we have in conveniences (or some people consider necessities) today.

Some of the things we don't have and never miss.

Ice maker in the fridge (no water or ice in the door either)

Dishwasher

Texting or internet on the cell phones

No 'i' anything. No ipad or iphone or ipod

Air conditioning in the house (and never had it in the car until my son was born in 1996)

DVR or any other way to record television

I'm sure there is more that other's responses will make me remember.

What things considered modern conveniences or modern necessities do you live without (either by choice or for financial reasons)?

mominohio----I'm trying to figyre out what kind of car you had that didn't have AIR conditioning.  Didn't all cars have air?                  We don't have  DVR, dishwasher, or tv recorder.-----------tedEbear

I also have no air conditioning.  The top floor of the house can get pretty hot during the summer at times, but at night the sea breeze (the ocean is right down the hill) sweeps in and makes sleeping comfortable.  I might get another window AC unit, as I gave one away, but we don't have too many days that are unbearably hot during the summer.

I would never even think about an ice maker in the fridge.

I don't have a cell phone or a tablet, just a laptop and a regular phone.

I also don't have a microwave.  I never wanted one.  When my parents closed their business and retired, they gave me their microwave. It has since stopped working, but I haven't replaced it.  I don't like the way microwaved food tastes usually, although vegetables in those plastic packages are good.

One thing I would like to get is a cappacchino maker.  I had one that didn't function very well, as you had to froth the milk in an add-on arm.

@tedEbear

I was still driving a 1986 Chevy Sprint about the time my son was born, and it never had air. Many of the base model cars from the 1980's didn't have air, and some of our used cars had air originally, but it broke years before we got them. Even with my husband being a mechanic, we couldn't afford the parts to fix it, and did without back then. We often buy a very base model brand new car now, but then drive it for at least a decade, often much longer.

Re: What 'modern conveniences' do you live without?

We don't use a dvr because there isn't much on tv that we think is worth recording. But that's just us. I accept conveniences gratefully when they improve our lives. I recall being so miserably hot in boiling and humid St. Louis summers when I was a toddler before we got air conditioning. That weather KILLED people, so I'm happy AC became available. I am glad to keep in close touch with beloved friends and relatives thanks first to the computer and then my iPad and grateful that, as a history lover, I can look up info and great videos and documentaries online now that I quit work and have time. Can't imagine life without a microwave. Enjoy satellite radio in the car so I can listen to CNN to pass the time on the road. Love having an ice maker, too. No complaints. If it works for you, use it.
