What measures are being taken around the country to combat the rise in Homelessness. I do know that statistics indicate that rent fees have increased throughout the country which may be one factor . Is there an increase in Homelessness because of what issues ? What as a society are we doing to prevent such a tragedy of so many living on the street.

Your posting won't last the day but......50 years ago we didn't just dump the mentally ill out on the street. There were institutions providing a home - food - and medical attention. Today we're so PC - can't do that.

Experience tells me this thread will turn into a political argument. But I'll contribute this:
I worked with homeless individuals & families for six years. My contacts were in every church and charitable agency, and every social service organization with outreach and homeless shelter programs in the most densely populated part of the state.
My program actually set homeless people up in housing, complete with some basic stuff like beds/table/lamps/bedding&dishes, etc.
This was after other agencies had resolved contributing issues that had led to their homelessness in the first place.
And they weren't just dumped out there. They remained in contact with professionals who 'held their hand' as they resumed life off the street.
Sounds like a plan, huh?
This is where I'll stop, because it's not all pink unicorns and balloons.
@skatting44 , this issue is way too complex to discuss here, beyond the "feel good" surface.

Most homeless are chronic due to alcohol/drugs and mental health issues, including our homeless veterans.
Voting, legislating, more vouchers won't solve the issue.
In the past, I have volunteered my time to causes.

"What measures are being taken around the country to combat the rise in Homelessness."
Nothing
"What as a society are we doing to prevent such a tragedy of so many living on the street. "
To little
"Never argue with a fool. Onlookers may not be able to tell the difference."

I can't believe someone here just seemed to suggest the return of Dickensian poorhouses. Crikey. Never suggest for others something you wouldn't be willing to endure yourself.

Food and shelter are universal human rights. If you don't believe that, well...that's why there are hungry and homeless people.

A lot of the homeless in my area refuse shelter...for some It is a way of life.
