In my area they have put in cheesy ones at the side of the road. They have a small slit that flashes yellow when someone wants to cross the road
They aren't worth a hoot. we have had so many pedestrians hit ,and some killed, they are now putting a proposal , on the ballot,to put in the old fashion lights that hang over the road.
I can't believe that the crossing lights they put in actually passed a city council meeting. They just look ridicules. Its a pity it takes injury and deaths to get people to do the right thing, eventually

I know this isnt germane but I remember trying to cross the Via Veneto in Rome, feeling I was taking my life in my hands just to get to American Express office down the street from our hotel.
Traffic lights were only a suggestion for the motorists. Terrifying.

Ours are round lights on a bright yellow pole. When the button is pushed, traffic in all directions gets a red light. Then the pedestrian light flashes seconds remaining to walk.
