For herbs I like basil, rosemary, thyme and cilantro.
Edit to add rosemary. I don't know why I didn't think of it, I grow it in the backyard.

Turmeric is a GREAT antioxidant, anti inflammatory and (mild) antidepressants.
These compounds are called curcuminoids, the most important of which is curcumin.Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric. It has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant. However, the curcumin content of turmeric is not that high… it's around 3%, by weight (2).

When I cook, I experiment with all kinds of spices and have quite a collection from Penzey's, The Spice House, The Spice and Tea Exchange, and The Savory Spice Shop. The two that I use a lot are Ruth Ann's Muskego Avenue for Chicken and Fish from Penzey's and Coastal Blend from The Spice & Tea Exchange.
When I took cooking classes in Santa Fe, I discovered cooking with different kinds of chiles and am now growing my own. I really like adding them to whatever I am cooking.

I was in the supermarket the other day and found turmeric in the produce section. It's a root.

It is!
A spice by definition is a seed, fruit, root, bark, berry, bud or other vegetable substance primarily used for flavoring, coloring or preserving food. Spices are distinguished from herbs, which are parts of leafy green plants used for flavoring or as a garnish. Wiki

We grow rosemary too. I don't use it a ton. I use my mint a lot though. I even have leeks growing this year. @Noel7 I grew lemongrass at my old house.

I've seen it in the Indian market before but I don't buy it in it's natural state, just dried and ground. I do use it a lot in Indian dishes and rice.

I used to grow mint and several other herbs but it was daily work and soil in the city is the pits so I gave up.
At least rosemary thrives here. When we used to grill every summer, I threw springs on with the meat, sometimes directly on the coals, it smells wonderful.

@Noel7 I wasn't being very technical but one mystery of life got solved -- where does turmeric come from?
