They have a complete ecosystem, with moss and insects, living in the hair on their backs...they look green. That helps camouflage them from predators.

ewww.   All that stuff on their backs?  Gross, but brilliant!

Is the green only from that which is living on their backs or color also coming thru the skin from the green that they eat?

The green color comes from moss and algae growing in the fur. Moths and other insects have been known to live in there, too. It's a symbiotic relationship where they all  benefit each other and there's no harm being done to any part of the ecosystem by their existence within it.

"What crawls on sloths?"

"Their fur, which has cracks in the hairs to let algae take hold and grow, is home to a whole ecosystem of tiny insects. The algae growing in their fur sustains a range of species like moths, beetles, cockroaches, and worms—and hundreds of individuals can be found living on one sloth."

I watched an interesting show about sloths. They talked about giant sloths, now extinct, and they lived in caves that they made by tunneling underground where in recent times their skeletal remains were found. They were absolutely HUGE!
