What is the point of pulling up old threads

It boggles my mind why a newbie searches for a 4-5-or 6 month old thread to to add their comments to, why not start a new thead?

Color me confused

@I am still oxoxsome people get miffed when people start new threads about the topics already discussed....maybe they typed in a topic or see first if it was already out there....I am just guessing here.

@I am still oxox

There are forums that actually have rules against starting new threads without first doing a search on the subject.

Adding to a discussion makes much more sense than starting over repeatedly, having to answer the same questions, etc. Just because a thread wasn’t started today doesn’t mean the information in it is worthless.

I want new, fresh info.  I never read old threads on purpose, or those with a whole bunch of answers, for that matter.  I find that somewhere in the middle the discussion has turned to potholders or whatever, something totally unrelated.

Some people don't know how to start a thread, or would rather not.  So they find a pre-existing thread on the same topic.

Because they end up here from Google and probably don't even notice the date. I found these forums when I was trying to figure out why it was taking so long for an order to ship.

Or the other option is true. I've often seen someone start a thread and the person is promptly told there are other threads from the past about it and they shouldn't have started a new one.

Can't win around here sometimes.

@depglass You are so right! When I see a thread that’s multiple pages long, I’ll read the first page or the first few posts. Then I’ll go to the last page and sometimes it’s pretty funny!

ITA! Someone Googles something that leads them here. Nothing wrong with them replying. I'm sure they don't see it's an old post. Even if it is maybe someone can aswer their question.

I truly don't care, I read what what I want and pass on everything else no matter the age of the thread.
