Among more bargain type stores, I much preferred the KMart of old to today's Walmart option. Going way back, I loved Memco, which sold everything, including groceries. I always enjoyed going there with my mother and found some really nice things there.
In the DC area, it was Memco. In California, it was Gemco.
I miss it, too.

Pier 1. I bought a LOT of furniture and home decor there. EVERYTHING that I bought there was/is EXCELLENT quality.

@Desertdi wrote:The Paradise Valley Mall was demolished in January in favor of LUXURY high-rise apartment and condo buildings. This was a Macys and Dillards anchored shopping center. I believe this was a disservice to the community. There is no other "brand name" mall around here.
PV mall was nice and in a good location. Scottsdale Fashion has become to rich for my blood. They are kicking Williams Sonoma and other stores out to become a luxury mall. I was there 2 years ago and very few stores were within my price range.

I can't name just one store that I miss. So many have already been mentioned.
I do miss "mall" shopping and some of the great department stores that are long gone. Abraham and Straus, B Altman, Strawbridge and Clothier, John Wannamaker, Bambergers, all department stores I loved.
There are still 2 large Malls close to where I live that are popular, Willow Grove Park Mall and King of Prussia Mall, but I am not as interested in the anchor stores any longer.

I was going to post Pier One, too. I have so many things from there, mostly big wicker chairs. I'm so sad they are no longer.

Both my parents loved Filene's Basement in Boston---the original one, in the basement under the main Filene's, an upscale store. I was so sad when they closed. My dad sometimes would stalk a new suit there, often waiting weeks for the later discounts and pouncing. But Filene's also had a huge bin of remaindered books, and he esp. liked philosophy, acquiring the Modern Library editions for a quarter. I liked buying winter coats in the off season there.
Another store I loved was in my NYC years: Loehmann's. It was full of incredibly good deals, and had a kind of happy community buzz to it. (The buzz and bustle of happy bargain hunters.)
