Well I'm now curious about this elusive word we have been searching for.  We've offered every possibility that even remotely describes this person.  Hoping the OP had an epiphany and returns to enlighten us with the mystery word.

I had a cousin that would always exaggerate everything. No matter what it was he would never be honest about it. I guess he wanted to make himself sound or seem better at whatever! We all knew this about him.
