What is Instagram?

Instagram is the latest buzzword in social media. Celebs are always talking about it and I've been hearing Instagram this and Instagram that on the radio and TV lately. Can someone explain exactly what it is? Admittedly I'm one of the last to jump on a new trend, as I just joined Facebook a few months ago, LOL. Now I'm hearing the name Instagram more than even Facebook lately.
