Re: What does "once removed " mean when it comes to relatives?

A cousin who is “once removed” is a generation above or below you. For example, your dad's first cousin is your first cousin, but she is “once removed” because there is a generation between you and her. Another example of a cousin once removed would be the child of your first cousin.

To be “once removed” from a cousin means you are separated by one generation. The number before “removed” will always represent the number of generations you are separated (“removed”) from the cousin.  Cousins who are "once removed" have a one-generation difference. A first cousin of your father is your first cousin, once removed.  Hope this helps!

It means that it is the child of the relative with whom you have a direct relation.  For example, the child of your first cousin is your first cousin once removed.  Mistakenly, many think you are second cousins, but in reality, your children and your first cousin's children are second cousins.

Adding:  We all responded at the same time, and everyone's answer is better than mine.  LOL

So, I have a "cousin", our dads were first cousins.  What is he to me?

You are a second cousin with your dad's first cousin's child.  You are a first cousin once removed with your dad's first cousin.

I learned something. I always called my cousins' children my second cousins.

@faeriemoon   @PA Mom-mom   Thanks so much.  I've wondered about that for years.
