I used to love the holidays when my kids were young, and we would get together with my mom & dad and sister and her family...

then, my sister joined a cult and gave up all holidays plus said good by to me and my family because we were not in the religious cult.

Both my parents died....and my sons now are grown with their own families....I do see my son and his family on Christmas Eve, ususally at my house.. My other son lives 4 states away, and we are invited there but the cost of flying at Christmas is too expensive..Driving there now is not an option...we are older now and the traffic and the 8 or more hr. drive is too much for us..

 ..

I am very happy that  my sons do want to see us at Christmas...but it just isn't the same anymore,  loved it when they were little and it was seen through their eyes.

I think I know what  cult she joined.  If they are a cult as such, but their religion doesn't, believe Christmas is Christ,s BD.  They believe it is the BD of the pagan sun God, so that is why they do not accept Christmas.  I do not belong to that religion, but studied the bible with them for years and found it very interesting.  The weather and climate when Christ was born and traveling in Winter would have been difficult for Mary and Joseph.

I don't "hate" the holidays - they are bittersweet. I get homesick. I miss the hustle and bustle of Fifth Avenue and Rockefeller Center. I get very lonely during the holiday season as everyone has somewhere to go or is with their families. Me I will be home with my furbaby. It can be depressing if you let it, but I've gotten more used to it over the last few years and each year becomes easier. To be honest being alone is not as bad as going someplace you don't want to be.

AMEN I know the feeling.

Since everyone I had great family dinners with is gone, I,m left with everyone on their cells texting in the same room.  No more card games, monopoly, etc.  or interesting conversations.  At 81, it,s a different world.

Relatives  that are nosey in your business and /or strangers.  I remember when I was around 13  these friends of my dads  invited us for dinner and they decided to talk about how fat i am for the whole evening. I was mortified!!!!!!!. I was not even fat back then.  I was bigger than other kids my age but as far as weight to height ratio  I was somewhat normal. Holidays seem to be the time of inappropiate conversations that noone dares to talk about any other time of  the year. Also religion tends to get thrown into your face this time of year which is ackward  if you are an athiest  or of a non-traditionial religion.

@kcladyz  I am reading this line as you are not into religion, and that it fine.

However, I don't see where religion tends to get thrown into anyone' face; unless a person is trying to convert a non-believer, celebrating the religious themes of Christmas is an individual choice.

The day off from work (for those who have it) does not require one person to attend church services.  People can go about their paid vacation day as they see fit.

Or spend their bonuses the next day as they see fit.

Christmas is a time of religion for some;

Christmas is a time for secular thinking for others;

Christmas is a time for both religion and secular themes for others.

And some do not give one whit about the day at all.  That is fine.

I celebrate the religious; but I also celebrate secular themes.

Unless a person is tied to advent candle lighting and religious services, I am pretty sure most folks are also taking their kids to see Santa (a secularized version of St. Nicholas) or enjoying Frosty the Snowman or singing secular holiday songs.

I get tired of reading how the religious aspect of Christmas is thrown in the faces of people who do not acknowlege that part.

Live and let live.   It's getting tiring to always have to tip-toe around this issue, whether the issue is religion or secular.

Re: What do you hate about the holidays?

Do not think I can say  "I hate" anything about the holidays. Will say, however, I strongly detest the long advance of the holidays - not only in the stores by displays but everywhere it seems. The two that bug me the most are Thanksgiving and Christmas. Wish everyone could remember what those "holidays" represent. Sigh.

I do not celebrate Christmas, always felt left out as a kid, now I am a bit blah about the whole thing.

I do not want to holidays shoved down my throat

I give holiday gifts but that is the end of it for me

The crazy people who come out to shop that must not ever leave their house any other time of the year.  Creepy.

Was it a religious difference?  I can see that.

I find it interesting that so many people in Japan go all out for a secular Christmas.
