@IlliniGirl88 wrote:@shell garden - I love puzzles (I got the one you posted correct), I do jigsaw puzzles, play board games, like to cross stitch, and play the piano. All of those activities keep my mind active.
@IlliniGirl88......yay...you got it. I used to play the piano when I was younger. I love piano playing, please keep it up.

@Sooner wrote:To stay alert I listen to classical music, read, pay the bills, do the banking, figure out which insurance to take, learn all the new things on the computer and phone, go out with friends and talk, try to stay interested and alert to what is going on, make grocery lists and take inventory of what we need, decide what to cook, get the oil changed in the car, pray and read the Bible (my form of meditation) and try to get enough sleep and a good balanced diet, figure out what I need to get rid of or throw away, and keep up with things that require using the brain and problem solving.
I really think it is these things that keep your brain going. Puzzles are fun to do, but they don't require you to be creative--and I think that's what really keeps the brain alert.
@Sooner...good for you for staying extremely active. No, just puzzles won't do it, but they are fun too.
Remember HIGHLIGHTS in the Doctor's office? LOL! LOVED those!

ETA - oh, oops! It's the one on the left which I just noticed is numbered 3. Sorry about that. I tend to go from left to right and didn't even notice the numbers went the other way.
@chickenbutt....OMG, LOL...I DID THE SAME THING!!!
It's like 2 puzzles in 1, lol.
Ha! Talk about trying to keep the brain active!
I can say it now, because it is no longer true but I used to be very smart. Now - oh geez, no more memory - like AT ALL. I get confused all the time. I do stupid stuff every day.
I can't even express how frustrating this has been for me. I'm not all THAT old for crying out loud. But I seem to be losing it.
One little thing that I do is play solitaire on the computer. That makes me focus, and focus on all the areas, in addition to doing so quickly because the faster you win a game the more points you get.
I do a lot of stuff for the express purpose of generating focus. I also get these things where it's like the data in my brain just disappears for short (mostly) periods.
Like I've walked up to one of the doors in my house and had absolutely no idea what I needed to do to make it open. One day I couldn't figure out how to use the safety (hand op) can opener that I've used for 10 years. That one lasted all day. Poor puppy didn't get the pumpkin in his breakfast that day.
Sometimes I cannot relate to my surroundings but it usually only lasts a handful of seconds. I just stand there and wait until it comes back.
I think exercises to make one focus, calculate, and just generally think about things are very valuable. This is a place that nobody ever envisions finding themselves!
I have many moments like that. Will head to the kitchen and when I get to the door, forgot what I was going in to get......go back to where I was, then I remember. I call those moments....."my chemo moments". It can get frustrating......but don't really let it bother me too much.
I love to do puzzles, play games on my computer, and now that I have my new glasses and can read once again, have been trying to read one book. Used to be an avid reader, but once my eyesight started getting bad, I had to quit. Know I was missing out on a lot. But, I did have some side affects from the chemo treatments I am getting.

Unfortunately, a creative mind is always active. I keep sketch pads all over the house for when ideas pop up for jewelry or a painting. My problem is turning off the activity when it's bedtime. There's a sketchbook on the night table & I do wake up w/ a great idea, sketch it out, roll over and go back to sleep.

I have 10 deck solitaire game I play on line. Do cross words. Fight with my husband.
I actually use to enjoy doing more complicated tax returns.
Now if only I could understand all the ins & out of issues I have with my Mac, I'd be pretty proud of myself.
