I just turned 80 -- so middle age is 60.

Isn't it a number?  Don't you go by statistics?  Doesn't the "middle" mean "the middle?"  

It isn't a perception.  It's a number. It means the range of ages when you have lived half of your life.  If you are at the far end of the range, you're coasting toward the end and better get done what you want to do and quit worrying about how you look or how old people THINK you are.

People can live in to their 80's, so our life span (on the whole) is longer.  So 50's to me.  Hong Kong & Japan have longer life spans then in the U.S.

I don't know what it is, but I'm 52 and my joints say I am past middle age. I'm happy to be to just be here, honestly, its a blessing no matter how much I creak, croak and moan.

It dawns on you when you see your kids looking old.  Seems to happen when they are their 40s, so 40s it is.
