My in-laws were never warm nor welcoming, yet told me to call them Mom and Dad when I married their son. I just couldn't do it. My B-I-L told me that his mother would have a heart attack if I ever asked to call her by her first name, so I called them nothing for 25 years. Now they want to have a "better relationship" (a little too late, but I'll try for my DH) and I told them that I will call them whatever they want, just not Mom and Dad. My M-I-L choked, but they agreed that I can call them by their first names.

My mother in law and I were very close however I just could not call her ""Mom"" so I called her by her name . My daughter in law calls me by my name or calls me Nana which is fine.

Thank God!
Sadly I have to co-sign your post. I had a horrible MIL. I don't feel guilty that she is gone.

You don't want to know what I called her. Oh, you mean to her face? Nothing really.
