@noodleann I also live where it's picked up every week. I say you do what you can do without attracting bugs and then start trashing since it's permitted. That's such a great attitude to make the extra effort especially when it's not easy to do. Yay, you! 👏🏻

In Fairfax County where my daughter lives they're not taking it. She rattled off something about the bags, the plastic and so on. Mine just goes in a container and they take it so it isn't any different than before.

Not doing anything now and it bothers me. When I moved to my condo in Florida in 2018, each building had a large recycle bin and one for regular trash. There were specific rules published for what went in the recycle bin. Sometime last year Waste Management (who picks up both) started complaining continually that people here were using plastic bags to contain things such as paper, plastic, and cans in the recycle bin. Eventually they told our HOA they would start charging us if we didn't stop doing this. I think most people here had no other way to "carry" these items individually to the bin unless it was somehow bagged. Waste Management didn't want to be bothered with opening the bags to sort items at their plant. I did read that a complaint had been filed against them, and they were backing off. Too late, our HOA and board decided to pull out all the recycle bins and now everything goes in the regular trash. Since we have the COVID problem now, we no longer have HOA meetings to discuss issues in the complex. Shame.

Waste Management came into our area with a lot of fanfare several years ago. They did a lot of mailings of teaser offers, but the fine print put me off. Besides, I like hauler I inherited from the former owners and have no reason to switch. I've noticed that the Waste Management containers have largely disappeared, replaced by my hauler's bins or Hometown, another national hauler.
It sounds as if WM didn't want to have to do any sorting in your complex. Single- and even dual-stream almost invite what the recycling industry calls "aspirational" recycling, but is really contaminating loads--putting food garbage and disposable diapers in with true recycling, for example. The contamination problem is what led China to pull the plug on us.
And so it goes. Problems of plenitude seem almost shameful these days. ![]()

I have three containers. Trash, yard waste and recycle. They are all picked up weekly.

Our complex is a 55+ adult community so many of the truely ederly are limited in what they can carry. Everytime I emptied my recyclables, all I ever saw were items in plastic bags to contain them. I think the decision to remove the recycle bins was made by our uninformed HOA president who is no more. I'm sure he didn't want to be bothered so had them removed. And Waste Management...so they had to cut open bags with paper or plastic bottles? They still had to sort items when everything was thrown at random in the bin. Bad for the environment and stupidity all around.

Our private trash hauler takes recycles too. We pay extra for recycle for years to help the environment. They are still working here and come weekly.

We were issued two large blue lidded containers...One for trash and other with a yellow lid to recycle.
Both containers are placed at curbside and picked once a week. Nothing has changed.
We can even place one large item out weekly like a refrigerator, sofa or mattress. We have great garbage service here.

We aren't required to recycle.
