Re: What 'ancient' skill do you possess?

@sabatini I paid someone to address my envelopes. Calligraphy. They were beautiful.

Re: What 'ancient' skill do you possess?

I can add, subtract, and multiply without the aid of a calculator or computer

I can spend a whole 15 to 20 seconds going down an escalator or elevator and can actually endure the "trip" WITHOUT using my smart phone Woman Very Happy

I can still operate a VHS player to view old movies from the 30's and 40's that haven't been converted to DVDs.....

And I know how to embroider and cross stitch---

I still have not lost sight of the fact that respect begets respect; the use of " please & thank you" can actually be said as well as texted.  How about the words of, "...I love you" that do not take batteries, ran by a remote control or have to be utilized on the Internet.  I will never forget the skill of what a physical hug can give.  I do not need to plug in, do Facebook, Instagram or Twitter to explain my appreciation or acknowledgement of my communication & sincerity of whom I am interacting with.  And...I do not take the word "ancient" as anything offensive, lol!

@BornToShop  Not only MANNERS, but taking the time to send a HANDWRITTEN note to thank someone or just let them know you appreciate them or maybe just thinking about them.....

Both oral & written communication skills. All the little details... All served me very well this week. Would not have been able to manage without them.

@willdob3 I concur about oral and written communication skills---sometimes at work I get put in charge of training new employees and it's amazing that some of these college graduates don't know how to write --whether it be a simple business letter or putting their thoughts into a written report....they can only write in "textspeak".....

I can count back change.

@sailor_moon - This brought back a memory!  About a hundred years ago I worked for a few years in a bookstore.  We were a small crew and all took turns on the cash register.

One day this old man walked up with his books.  I rang them up and then counted out his change, at which point he said "You young'uns!  Can't even make change without a register to tell you how much!"

I was flattered at the "young'uns" but I looked at him and pointed to the cash register.  "Do you see anything there that tells me how much change I should've given you?"  He admitted there was not.  I said "I can calculate the change in my head.  I never use the register!"

Put that in your pipe and smoke it, Mr Old'un!  Woman Tongue

@Venezia  I am an NFL/NBA sports fan and watch an ESPN show, Mike & Mike.  Sometimes they bring up topics other than sports....one of the commentators talked about changing times and over dependence on technology.....and the other one shared that he went to a fast food place to pick up breakfast and the computers were down and the kid behind the counter could not figure out how much change to give back so he had to help the kid---he said his Elementary School served him well....LOL!!!

Typing on a typewriter, reading real books you hold in your hand! lol. Cursive writing. I still hand write and send birthday, Christmas cards, and yes even letters on occasion (to my friend in CA). Math skills. (I still do our taxes on paper because I love Math!). We still have house phones and oh my even a dial wall phone..lol.. (i still use!)

As far as crafts -I started to do latch hook again recently, but other than that I (sadly) did not inherit my Moms ability to sew (she was a seamstress/tailor plus she did quilting). I am also good at photography with a REAL camera (not a stupid cellphone camera!).

I also still carry a pocket calendar in my handbag and write all of my appointments in it.

I still bake, cook, and make homemade foods (doesn't everyone though?) and I play guitar and keyboard (although I'm a bit rusty on the guitar).

I also still hang out wash at times, (especially bedding b/c there's nothing like smelling fresh air on your sheets!).

And lastly- I still play cards (very well) as well as board games. Also-  I make my grandkids hopscotches, taught them how to play game outside like red light green light, tag, etc. (the list goes on), and we play with chalk and go to a playground. Which to me is normal but with all technology now days lots of kids are sitting in playing on electronics! PS I, we, or they will be doing all of that this Summer when 2 of them come here 2 days a week. (the 3rd graduated now and works so I wont be watching her)

.

Im sure there are more but all this is off the top of my head! lol.

@Shorty2U  I am glad my friends and I get together and still play cards with an old fashion deck of cards.......so much fun along with the laughs and camaraderie. Also we also bring out non-electronic games like Cranium, Scattagories, Trivial Pursuit (play in teams) etc etc......Why even a friend's 23 year old daughter joined us and commented she had so much fun--imagine that !!!  Woman Very Happy

I can plant, tend and harvest a garden as well as identify different flora in the wild. I can make infusions, poultices, salves and tinctures from medicinal herbs. I also can bake and cook from scratch using only natural ingredients. I can start a fire and cook over an open flame. I am able to sew, knit, and do many kinds of decorative needlework.

I can can do simple arithmetic and make change in my head. I can touch type and use correct punctuation, grammar and spelling.

Re: What 'ancient' skill do you possess?

I can type on a typewriter (if only I could find one).

I can and occasionally still use Gregg shorthand (no longer required for a job).

I still have beautiful cursive writing (may it never go out of style).

I still make (rather than purchase) wreaths and each one is custom.

I can bake a cake from scratch (no box needed).

I still have a home land line phone and can use it.

I and DH can fix things and don't have to call a repair person.

This thread humbles me...you people are fantastic!!!  The baskets, the sewing, the quilts. Such useful talents! Reading maps...a mystery to me. I can write cursive and use a typewriter that's about it.  😳
