If it's a respiratory virus, why are people hoarding TP? I understand the cleansers but wouldn't it make more sense to make sure you have cough syrup and fever reducers on hand? They say the symptoms are cough and fever.

@cookinfreak If you get sick and are homebound for some extended time, do you not see the importance of having toilet paper?
Working people who are at home all day now are using more.
What about not having toilet paper do you not understand? Don't most people keep some extra around? Who thinks Oh I'll just wait until I run out then pick some up when I'm at the store.
Milk, you can run out of. Lots of things you can be without for a few days, or weeks, or months.

They are hoarding tp for when they will be quarantined and can't leave the house. Has nothing to do with No.2.

I am assuming it's because if they are confined to the house for weeks, they want to make sure they have enough on hand.

I think some people are afraid they might be stuck at home for a month or more and don't want to have to go back to grocery store and get things.
I do know that if you have a housefull of kids and most of them are already going to be home for at least a month or not go back to school at all then they could go through the TP quickly whether they should or not.

I get that people may end up at home for an extended period of time and wanting a little extra of a lot of things, but what I am talking about are the people who have hoarded hundreds and hundreds of rolls.

I couldn't agree with you more @cookinfreak - when I have seen reportings of the purchase of tp in excess, a segment on the Today show I believe it was, stating that the average family of four uses 17 rolls over a two week period, two-ply no less - it boggles the mind.
I truly think there is a need in this nation of a toilet paper intervention.

Toilet paper has become conflated with control over one's life. We cannot insure that we'll avoid exposure to this virus, but we CAN stock up on what we need if we are quarantined. Some people have simply gone nuts with hoarding. It's unlikely that buying gross amounts of toilet paper will save anyone.

I agree, @cookinfreak. I think people are feeling like they have so little control over everything right now. When they find toilet paper, that is one thing they can control and they are buying way too much. Along with the fact that most of us think we will be quarantined. And God only knows for how long.
It seems like they are hoarding other things too though. I placed an order on wal mart, and they were out of more than a few of my things.
I think we are freaking out, because of fear of the unkown and its making some of us act irrationally.
