@teganslaw Too right. I haven't written a check in years and do all bill paying online and have AAA, Costco and UHC payments deducted automatically. When I go to the grocery store I use my debit card and get some cash back.

In 20 years I've had no problem. I only carry a small-ish amount of cash. Works for me!

@Love my grandkids  Debit Card all the way and it doesn't matter what others think. Getting Cash back makes it even better.

That's probably to recoup what they have to pay the credit card company. Some places are starting to charge extra if you use a credit card. My vet has stated that practice.and some eating places

Before I retired the veterinarian I worked for asked the office staff if we thought that he should start charging an additional fee for our clients who used a credit card.  We all said no.  We felt that would alienate many of our clients most of whom used a credit card for their payment.

He has now retired and sold his practice to a veterinary corporation.  I'm sure they are now charging a fee and I've heard that more than a few clients have left the practice.

I'm sure that isn't entirely the reason but when you present a client with a bill of over $3000.00 for a surgery and then stick on a fee of $4.00 for a credit card processing fee that doesn't sit too well with many clients.

Another racket besides the extreme fee charged on auto renewals as mentioned in original poster's note:

Don't renew for more than the current year.  If your vehicle is totaled, you will not get credit for the second year's prepaid status.  This happened to us when our van was totaled in FL in February.

That depends on that state apparently.  Our multi year tags are transferable.

This is common practice today.  Don't blame your state because they don't control what cc companies charge them. If you don't want to go through the hassle of a check (I still do on some occasions), then pay right out of a bank account and there are no fees attached. I pay several bills this way including my HOA fees.  I won't use my cc if I'm charged an extra fee.  Some of my local restaurants are offering discounts if the bill is paid in cash.  I don't quite understand how people don't carry cash on them, but the world is a different place.

@Sage04 Yep. Years ago my bank had an ATM in my grocery store. Took it out so I do cash back. Not gonna drive to the bank's ATM when Safeway is 1.5 miles from home!

@jlkz  are you talking about your Vehicle Tag renewal? Didn't realize that you could renew for two years. Here in Georgia as far as I know, your Tag is renewed every year of your Birth month,

@Love my grandkids  when I shop I usually ask for Cash back with my Debit Card before I check out. Once I needed $300 but most grocery stores only give $100 with one transaction. So I paid for my items and got the first $100.

Then bought something for $1 and got another $100. This employee came and ask what am I doing and I shouldn't be doing that. I asked her who made her a Judge and it's my money and I can do what ever I want. I bought a candy bar and got the other $100 while she was standing there. All she did was walked away when I was finished.

Kroger now charges 50 cents and I don't mind paying that because I can get an odd amount back, where as most Stores only give back even amounts. Who knows, there migh come a day when there might be a law that says that it was illegal for Stores to charge a few to get cash back lol.

@Mindy D wrote:"If I had not scanned to get in I would have been brought to two ther pages that mentioned there would be a $2 fee. One of the paragraphs said the fee was for credit cards. The Quick Scan by BYPASSED the fee information, which was incorrect information anyway. There is nothing that says that paying by bank information would not be charged a fee. The UN corrected portal page says when entering the potal to pay you will be charged a $2 fee. I wonder if I would have been charged that way. I was a little leery of doing it that way since both Oregon and Louisianna had all DMV information, including payment information, banking and Social Secuity information stolen in June.

I think that on the bill that came in the mail with the Quick Scan to pay online should have included that there's a fee to pay this way and how much the fee would be. It should be in a prominent location on the bill. There should also be information about other ways to pay that do not include a fee right on the bill."
