@Mindy D   This seems to be the way things are going now.  I know from personal experience that most merchants are passing along their fees to the consumer.  It used to be they "ate" the cost & it was the cost (literally) of doing business.  Now, they want to share the love.....   My attorney tacks on a % fee if I pay by credit card.  Seeing how that can add up pretty quickly I choose to pay by check in person while I am in his office anyway.  My son's barber shop charges a credit card fee.  My doctor's office charges a fee.  And the list goes on.  I am dreading the day when places like Publix follow suit.

All those extra "fees" no matter what they choose to call them really add up.  Just ask Taylor Swift & Ticketmaster.  Woman Sad

@Mindy D , should have asked, but from what state are you located if you don't mind saying. I pay with a check, so not sure what they do here in PA. BTW, it stinks that they don't tell you about that fee up front so you make your choice whether to go that route or not.

@catter70 @Florida. If I had not scanned to get in I would have been brought to two other pages that mentioned there would be a $2 fee. One of the paragraphs said the fee was for credit cards, no ther cards were listed. The Quick Scan by BYPASSED the fee information, which was incorrect information anyway. There is nothing that says that paying by bank information would not be charged a fee. The UN corrected portal page says when entering the portal to pay you will be charged a $2 fee. I wonder if I would have been charged that way. I was a little leery of paying with bank information since both Oregon and Louisianna had all DMV information, including payment information, banking and Social Secuity information stolen in June.

I think that on the bill that came in the mail with the Quick Scan to pay online should have included that there's a fee to pay this way and how much the fee would be. It should be in a prominent location on the bill. There should also be information about other ways to pay that do not include a fee right on the bill.

@Mindy D  this has been going on for years. The Merchants are the ones who do not want to pay the fee, so they pass it on to the customers. My son has a Company and he pays the fees. It's both Debit and Credit Cards and so far it's stayed at 3.50 which surprises me.

Even my hair dresser does this so I pay by Zelle.

@BunSnoop  the last time I renewed on line in Georgia I payed an extra 1.00. Don't know if it's more now since the price of stamps increased.

I don't know why that surprises you.  It's nothing new and most people gladly pay the measly nothing about of $3.50 per vehicle to quickly and safely to renew their registrations fees.  Perhaps your preference would have been to go down to the registration, stand in line and pay in cash but most people have moved beyond wasting their time like that.

When I renewed my tag in April I used my Debit Card and there was no additional fees. I also used the Drive Through and I was the only one there. I prefer doing that.

@Snooky60  for those who like using Checks that's ok. When I had a Storage Unit, I paid by Check because I refused to pay 3.50 per month extra by using my Debit Card. I bought 8 checks from my Bank and when I needed more I got it becaus it didn't make sense for me to pay for boxes of Checks that would last years.

One thing with paying by Cash for anything is if you lose your receipt and can't prove that you made the payment then there is a problem.

@teganslaw Too right. I haven't written a check in years and do all bill paying online and have AAA, Costco and UHC payments deducted automatically. When I go to the grocery store I use my debit card and get some cash back.

In 20 years I've had no problem. I only carry a small-ish amount of cash. Works for me!

While most retailers readily absorb credit card processing fees (which range from 1.5% to 3.5%) as a cost of doing business, government entities often do not and want to recoup the cost from you.

@ValuSkr  isn't that something?

This really isn't a racket.  Whenever you pay by cc or dc the merchant is charged a fee.  There is usually a flat fee for the transaction and then a percentage of the amount charged which can be any amount.  Back in the day it was anywhere from 3.5 to 5% based on the processor used and the amount of business you did.  Years ago when I had a business and we signed up to take cc/dc part of the agreement was you were not allowed to charge an additional amount to accept the card.  The way around was to include the fee in your sales price and offer a discount for cash.  It is not just the DMV, many small business and most all our restaurants are now charging an additional 3-4% to your bill if you choose to use your credit card.  I now carry cash, if my cashback on cc is not more than their fee I pay cash.  Most just consider it a "convenience" fee and pay it.

@catter70  don't forget that @Mindy D  used the Quick Scan. I never touch Quick Scan.

Same here with ordering from QVC. Don't remember what it's call but I prefer to take the extra few seconds to place my order.
