The pillowcase method always worked for me.

We travel with our cats all the time. So when we got them as kittens we taught them right off the bat to travel in the car. When we go up to our cottage I put them in their cage and off we go! They've acclimated quite nicely to traveling!

If you all think you have it difficult, try catching a small dog who has to go to the vet and has figured out it's him.....

I did everything to get ready as normally as possible. I changed nothing about my routine to indicate there was a vet visit ahead. It was as though I was going shopping. They both came in, sat under the treat jar. I had treats in both hands, bent over to give the one his treats and he grabbed it and ran. He never has done that before and yes, he was the one going to the vet. I still had 10-15 minutes before I needed to leave, I had no intention of grabbing him at that point but I needed every minute to outsmart him long enough to grab his little butt and haul him into the laundry room. Once in there, I shut the door and put his harness on him. The harness has been in there for a month.

I still have not figured out what it was I did, if anything, that put him on alert. I do hair and makeup almost every day; I get dressed for going out with no particular schedule. I hadn't blocked off escape routes by shutting bedroom doors. Heck, I hadn't even put my cell phone in my purse yet! For all they knew I could have been going to the grocery store. But somehow he knew he was going somewhere and Dr. WhiteCoat was going to be seen....

Isn't it amazing how they just "know"?? I never did figure out how I was tipping off my little cat that wound up hiding just when I was getting ready to pick her up. She would be there, and then suddenly I would turn around, and she was gone. It's not easy to find a little mostly black cat that doesn't want to be found! And I don't know exactly what it is that I do differently now that she doesn't hide - unless she's gotten so used to the vet trips that she just doesn't think it's worth the trouble anymore because she knows I will find her sooner or later!{#emotions_dlg.laugh}{#emotions_dlg.wub}

We get the carriers out 2 weeks in advance and leave them out in the open fo rthe cats to sniff and ignore and check out.....on vet day DH gets up and does his usual routine in the bathroom...all 3 kitties follow him to the bathroom every morning....he then tricks them and closes the bathroom door trapping them inside our master bath and then opens the door a crack and catches them one by one as they try to escape....as soon as he has one in the carrier he then opens the door a crack to catch the next one and so on....we have 3 cats.....of course they scream and howl and then act all angry at him but within an hour or less after they are back home they are over it until the next yearly checkup day rolls around.

This really gave me a giggle when I tried to visualize the whole scene. It sounds like something from an old D Van Dyke show.

Re: What Types Of Machinations Do You Employ To Get Your Cat Into The Carrier?

Brute force... We have tried all the "nice" things but he's smart guy. I can take the carrier out and put it in the living room two or three weeks before his vet appointment. He won't even look at it, if he has to get near it, he makes a big wide circle around it or he jumps over it. Coaxing him with treats or toys never worked, not even when he was a kitty. I don't try because all those claws that come out of nowwhere scare me. My husband puts on gloves and he can scoop him up and put him in the carrier before Tuffy even knows what hit him. And then the meowing, growling and whimpering begins all the way to the vets office.

Re: What Types Of Machinations Do You Employ To Get Your Cat Into The Carrier?

FUNNY! Smiley Happy (reading some of these posts!)

I have several cats (5) and all are different in getting them into the carrier.

2 all I have to do is pick them up and stuff them in (you know what I mean! HA!), no problem!

The 3rd, depending on her mood, can either be stuffed in or I have to chase her and put the carrier on its side (top loading in) and get her in that way.

The 4th I have to get when she's eating breakfast (always have a morning appointment for her) so I call her for breakfast, scoop her up when she's about to eat and than put her in the crate. I feel bad and than give this one breakfast when she gets home! Smiley Happy Edited to add, if I don't do my 'breakfast pounce' on her, it will take HOURS to find her and get her in the carrier, she's a runner!! But she ALWAYS comes for breakfast! Usually she's a bit skittish for a few days after this, but than settles down into her routine again.

The FIFTH (my newest addition to the family) is a BEAR to take anywhere. He's part wild cat (he's a Bengal) so what I've done when he needs to go to the vet is - corral him in a bathroom and lock the door behind me, put the carrier in there with some treats inside - if that doesn't entice him, I take a towel and grab him and VERY quickly stuff him in the carrier (top loading). He's STRONG and if I have to use the towel method, it still takes 10-15 minutes!! But at least he's in a confined space and can't run far! And I like the bathroom cause it's small and nowhere for him to hide!

Same here! She goes in easily enough, but on the way my "Perfect Princess Poppy" does BOTH in the carrier, howling all the while! Every.Single.Time. Once, it was so bad by the time we got to the vet (seriously, the carrier looked like she had fingerpainted the walls with the mess) that I felt awful and sent flowers the next day!
