Re: What To Do About Neighbors Dog

Neighbors got this dog a few months ago. Very nice dog, would say it's a terrier mix or something. White hair, medium to small size.
Haven't seen the dog in awhile, the boy brought it over today to say hi. I almost took that dog. This poor thing was matted horribly. Nails have not been cut. They were scratching the boy while he's holding her. The dog could barely see with all the hair in her face. I have never seen a dog so badly matted. Huge chunks of fur. I told the boy they really need to get her groomed. They are causing her pain. He said their mom couldn't afford it. She's on assisted living or something. She has six kids I believe. The boy said this dog is good. She can walk around the block but still comes back to them. They leave the gate open for her. The boy is really sweet. He loves playing with my dogs and treats them kindly. It breaks my heart to see a dog in that shape. I'm sure it's not up to date on shots so I can't just offer to have her groomed. And honestly, I don't know how charitable I want to be with this family. Sounds bad but if a door is open, some will try and take advantage. She has a teenage son who has friends that have guns. That's another story. So I'm trying to protect myself as well but something needs to be done about that sweet dog. Any ideas?

@funinthesun  I think you could make this your good dead for the day....go visit the Mom  and offer to take the dog to the groomers and pay for it.

Yes, it will cost you a few serious bucks....but look at it as your good deed to really help the poor dog.  Maybe tell the groomers  what you are doing and see if they will give you something off for just doing the right thing for this precious little doggy.

I was a groomer for 35 yrs. If a dog is severely matted, please do not attempt to cut the mats out with a scissor. I can’t even tell you how many dogs have had their skin cut from owners trying to cut mats out with a scissor, some pretty deep.

It doesn't take a genius to cut a mat out. I've done it for decades without so much as a nic. You just have to be careful and work at it gently and slowly. Good quality embroidery scissors work well.

So, you don't like the family because they are poor and have issues.  The dog needs help but you won't help because you don't like the family.  So, your solution is to make trouble for them?  Not to say that a dog in need of grooming even comes close to animal abuse.  This being the season of good will, I'd probably discuss the situation with my own vet and ask him (or her) if she could offer discount to the family for the shots and then the grooming and if he agreed, which I am 100% certain he would.    I'd foot the bill.  It would be my Christmas present to that little boy and the dog he loves.  But....that's just me.

@chrystaltree

Obviously you don't own a pet and after reading your posts on this, thank GOD you don't.

I'd get that dog his shots and the grooming he needs and it would be a gift to the family....and YOU have the nerve to think I don't care for animals????   What have you been drinking lady...LOL    I darn sure would not let the sad situation go on while sat back and threw hate bombs and the boy's family...because they happen to be poor!!!!   In this world we can be part of the problem or part of the solution and in situation like this, I like to say that I would be part of the solution!

        Bingo!   I just let those ridiculous comments go by.  Fur that is as badly matted as OP claims, needs professional attention.

Re: What To Do About Neighbors Dog

I love animals but I think my reply is going to sound cruel. It hurts my heart to hear that any animal is receiving poor/no care. Having said that, I also worry about the OP. I can't tell you what to do but please be aware of your own safety. If anything is done to rebuke this family, if the mother is fined or the dog threatened to be taken away, there almost certainly will be retribultion. This mother and her children will be against you and very importantly, they have guns. I'm not saying the mother would be involved in this but keeping an eye on a lot of kids is difficult, I'm sure.

Wishing you the best of luck in this situation, please keep us updated.
