gertrudecloset,
Then yes, we need to expand their duties. Times have changed. Passnegers and crew are now threatened by crazed and uruly passengers.
In the past, though, I have understood that air marshals have stepped in when there is trouble onboard, not necessarily terrorist-related. This information was straight from the mouths of FAA aviation safety inspectors.

Whoa, Nellie! My friend assigned to the investigation of these cases said that she and others, during a last zoom meeting, asked where the air marshals were.
They were not given an answer. That group knows what the air marshals are capable of doing, and they asked for them.

In 1961, spurred by a spate of hijackings, for the first time the federal government hired armed guards on civilian airplanes. They were border patrolmen from the Immigration and Naturalization Service. We need something similar again.

This makes me wonder how many women he's punched in their faces. I won't be surprised if a few show up.

Then people who are of like mind should rally the government for redress and changes to the structure of the Federal Agency @golding76 . Good luck with that though. That's so called "bigger government" we don't need according to some.

There's no excuse for punching a flight attendant, but I'm surprised more aren't snapping.
@Foxxee you're not keeping up. That might be a good thing. There are really bad fights on planes over the last year or so. Some have involved legitimate concerns and safety of passengers as well as staff. It's been so bad that one airline has discontinued alcoholic beverage service. Now you know they make money from liquor on those flights.
I read another story that was shameful, just this week, but won't go into details here. Seems like every week there's a story.

Violence is a natural result of political leaders and others inciting violence and constantly setting an example of vengeance and hate.

There isn't another side to the story.

Lets face it, people have changed. Times have changed. No longer do people dress up and wear their very best for a flight, nor are they on their good behavior. It's all about ME ME ME and to heck w/everyone else. Rules no longer apply. Punishments for bad behavior no longer exist. Everything is filmed on camera, no one is living in the present moment - its really sad. I'm glad I'm not a young person and lived my life when I did.
(I also think the present health fiasco has a lot to do with people being even more frustrated than usual - but that is no excuse.)
Boy, do I ever agree with everything you said. I absolutely dread flying.

@jellyBEAN I sooo agree!
I haven't read all the posts so I don't know what everyone thinks but here's my two cents. When I was growing up and also a young adult, my family flew to Puerto Rico every year. My mom is from there and we went to see relatives. My parents saved the money, year to year in order to afford to go. Like @jellyBEAN said, We all dressed up in our Sunday best and were on our best behavior. Flying was a treat and not everyone could afford to do it so frequently like people do now. The people I knew that had been on an airplane were few and those that had, also saved for the trip and only went maybe once a year or when absolutely necessary. Seems like now that it's commonplace for everyone(like so many things nowadays, where rules, etiquette, cost and standards have been lowered), that's exactly what it has become common!

@Mistreatedbycs, the other side is I want to fly on this aircraft as though it were a private plane where I can do exactly what I want, when I want, in the way I want without having to answer to anyone but me. I am the only one that counts so take your *&^*%& rules and leave me alone.
