Just put a sign up saying all cars that block the driveway will be towed at owners expense. Understand, you'll have to really have them towed a few times for people to take it serious.

When I lived in NYC, I knew people who had phoney fire hidrants in front of their houses. I'm not sure what the fine would have been if they were found out, or heaven forbid if someone's house burned down while the FD was mixed up over it, but they did it anyway.

Then she could say she didn't do it. Time has elasped and no cop has a report of what happened.
She is friendly with me, she feels terrible about what happened and was crying. I am doing her a favor, if she gives me trouble, which I hope she doesn't, I will have no choice but to alert my insurance company. I also have the note she left me, signed by her admitting what she did. My insurance company wouldn't be out a dime as she is in the wrong and her company would have to pay.

Hi @Jordan2 .. I had a similar problem at the house where my office is located. People would partially .. sometimes completely... block my driveway making it difficult, if not impossible, to get cars in and out of the driveway. And they would be parked there all day long.. probably taking the bus into Manhattan. Many times it was the same vehicles. I didn't want to to hurt anyone so I would leave notes on the offending vehicles. That didn't do any good. So I started calling the police to either ticket or tow the vehicles. That didn't even completely solve the problem... so I went to our mayor. He had a sign put up stating not to block the driveway. He also had yellow lines painted on the curb and street. Haven't had any more problems.

@Jordan2 wrote:Thanks to everyone for their advice. As far as the cars blocking my driveway I live in NYC and had to call 311 to complain. I was told they would forward the complaint to my local police department. I don't think anyone ever came, I caught the guy who blocked my driveway (he left soon after I called), all he said was sorry. How does someone not realize they're hanging into your driveway? The police will ticket the car, but that's it. I would have to call a towing company to get rid of the car. That is not in my nature. As for my neighbor, she really feels terrible about what she did. If she gives me a problem I will insist going through our insurance company. She doesn't want to as her insurance company recently paid her a lot of money and would probably drop her if she filed a claim.
This is more reason to alert your insurance company and file.
Her foot slipped and she did some damage to your car. Next time, it could be a child. If you fail to submit this to your insurance company, which will probably lead to the end of her driving, that accident would be on you. Do you really want to take that risk? Do the right thing and call your insurance company.
@noodleann, I understand your viewpoint, she has a son who is around 40 that lives with her. The responsibility lies with him to take away her driving privileges, not me. Also if I informed on her it would make life difficult living next door to each other.

That's good you have that. Is it dated and is her signature on it too?

If my car was being blocked, I would most definitely call to have it towed, not just ticketed. Especially if you have had a sign up. Sorry but if a person does not realize they are parking in a manner that makes it difficult or impossible for you to get out, then that is there problem and they deserve it. What do they expect you to do? Just sit and wait until they saunter out of their house and decide to move their car? No ma'am. I am sure that would be the last time they parked there, leaving you stuck. I would not feel the least bit guilty about it either.

@missy1, I dated the note, she did sign it. I can't see her lying about this she is ultra religious, it wouldn't sit well with her. I'm going to get an estimate and take it from there.

OP here, just an update.I brought my car in for an estimate on Wednesday. I asked them to email me an itemized estimate so I could give it to my neighbor.I explained the situation to the owner, I wanted a fair estimate. The estimate was for $707.69. I gave her the printout, she said for that? I don't know what century she's living in, but autobody work is expensive. I said if she didn't have the money we should go through our insurance companies (she had an accident recently and has change companies since then). She must have talked it over with her son, because she then came over and gave me 7 $100 bills (who keeps that cash in the house)? She said she didn't have any change and will pay me the $7.69. I'm not going to hold my breath, I'm glad I got the $700. I have to wait to bring in my car as I have to take my elderly mother to the doctor and will not have my car for 2 days (not getting a rental). I also have to get a ride to be picked up and dropped off to bring my car in (neighbor didn't offer her son's services). I didn't need this aggravation.

@Jordan2, you know what? I wouldn't be so nice if this happens again. Which I hope it doesn't, but if she keeps driving its liable to. If the son has any sense he will take those keys.
It doens't really sound like she and sonny boy appreciated your not going thru insurance. Yep, no more favors for them if it were me.
Sorry you are having to deal with this, I wouldn't want to be without my car for 2 days.
I would be so ticked off if I were you.
