I didn't notice it was filmed in the dark (and that's normally something I do complain about), so that didn't bother me. But with any TV show or movie, I need to either identify with a female character, or find a male character attractive (even if it's a bad boy), and I couldn't do either with this show. They just all annoyed me, a bit.
Both DH and I felt that it was the sort of show that gets a big audience the first week, but a lot of those viewers don't come back the next week. And then the show gets cancelled.
We'll watch it again because there's not a lot else on just at the moment, until the fall season really gets going, but nothing in it made us say, "Wow, I can't wait to see what happens next week". It was just meh.
Yeah. I hope they bring in better writers. For sure, Viola Davis deserves a shot at a well written show.
Ditto to you both.

I have to admit the flashbacks and flash forwards were confusing at the beginning, but after I figured out what was going on, I began concentrating on Viola Davis's character, which I found fascinating.
She's obviously extremely bright, ambitious, devious, manipulative and deeply flawed, like many humans in real life. Nor are her students innocent and naive, or are they? Not at all what one usually expects from an every-day crime/law drama on TV, which is what I like about it.
Don't forget, there were two murders, not just the husband. Was the young co-ed his lover? Who put the gashes in the headboard? Who lived in that dorm room before? There's a long trail of bread crumbs to follow in this complex plot. So many questions that will slowly be answered by the end of the season.

Hi RD! I'm so sorry I missed watching the re-run last night. We were hooked on Dateline.
Why is it that two or three shows are on in the same time slots then their are endless hours of boring nonsense most of the week? 3 good shows competing last night.

Hi Free. I hear ya'. It's a plot by the networks in rating wars. I've got On Demand thank goodness.

I really liked Viola Davis and her character.
I found the rapidity of the flashbacks distracting. This has apparently happened over a period of three months, so what all has happened during that time will be unfolding to the audience.
My take (which could be way off): Both Davis and her detective lover have been planning the death of her husband for a while because of his affair with his student: the missing-but-now found-dead psych student. This affair became apparent to me when towards the end when they are both in the bedroom watching the news reports about the found body, and she looked at her husband and said, "I still think her boyfriend did it." They both then looked away from each other.
I believe the first part of the set-up begins with her selecting some students from her first year law class who would fit into her murder scheme, and she did that based on the assignment she had given the entire class for the contest. She picked those students who were eager to please her, who came up with certain defense strategies that revealed their personalities and other characteristics that she felt would make them perfect as part of her plan. Particularly when some revealed how far they would go to help her. She has cleverly set them up in a fierce competition with each other to win her approval. She chose them carefully and knows them well.
So now we know that the body in the rug is, indeed, her husband. How they got to that point is yet to be revealed, but some how I think she and the detective are setting them up to eventually take the rap for the murder.
I think the story and pacing is disjointed at times, but I'm interested enough to watch next week's installment. I don't care for most of the other actors, but I do enjoy watching Viola Davis.

I'm keeping it on the recording list. I liked it but because of comments on this thread I was very alert when watching-keyed in on certain events.
I'm not so sure the 4 students killed the husband. The football player boyfriend of the missing girl and the female next door neighbor to the one male student are involved in this somehow. Either the professor husband killed the girl or the football player did. The football player and the girl weren't too shocked when watching the news about the missing girl's body.
As for the scene where the lawyer/professor talked with the student privately about being discovered: the very end of the scene showed her face and it was a very determined face. I think she was being very manipulative and even the tears were planned.

Not impressed and very disappointed. Very disjointed and I cannot believe they can carry this theme from season to season. It would have to be drawn out and I am wondering if they are going to murder people as a hobby episode to episode, year to year.
I am going to RESET MY DVR AND NOT RECORD THIS ONE.

I was lreally looking forward to this show. Disappointed, don't like it.
Guess I'm old school. Wanted to see something a little more Murder She Wrote-ish.
The major character's style does not appeal to me. Plotline too difficult to follow. No empathy for her students.
Just no, for me.
