Re: What Are You Reading --- November 2014

I haven't been reporting in lately but I'm still reading! Working my way through the Mary Russell/Sherlock Holmes series by Laurie R King. Loved the first couple of books, then the next one or two were a bit tedious so I skipped ahead and am enjoying the later books very much. I think if you read the first two, this is one series that can then be read in any order since previous plots are mentioned but not totally revealed.

Finished The Ape House by Sara Gruen and hated it. Just a mishmash of stupid characters (Russian hookers, green haired Vegans, stereotypical overachieving conniving woman, Woman with biological clock running and mid-life crisis, Unscrupulous Media Mogul/ POR N king, etc.) and ridiculous subplots. The titular apes were the most intelligent species in the story.

I so wanted to like this as I loved Water for Elephants and it made my "best book ever" list easily. Can't believe these were both written by the same author.

I wondered about that book choice! It seems a few years back there was a similar discussion. I opted against it after that.

I finished LAST NIGHT AT THE BLUE ANGEL by Rebecca Rotert. I thought it had great potential, but it wasn't my favorite. When it began I thought it was a coming of age book. Instead I felt it leaned more towards the dysfunctional, alcoholic, promiscuous mother who spent a significant portion of the book in intimate encounters with anyone with a pulse. Perhaps too much detail for me. I did have a fond spot for Sophia and Jim.

Going to a book club at the library Tuesday, and the book is THE LANGUAGE OF FLOWERS. I think it is good. About a girl in the foster system since birth until eighteen years of age, released and nowhere to go. How she survives, but cannot connect, doesn,t think she is worthy of love, but finds happiness in the flowers and their meaning. Example: yellow rose means jealousy. She goes on to start a business helping people through the meaning of the flowers she suggest for their lives at the moment. There are lots of flashbacks. This is the Author,s first book, Vanessa Diffenbaugh. The story takes place in San Francisco and the Wine Country. I recognize so many of the streets. Pretty interesting.. Sorry, no breaks in paragraphs, using my Kindle. Will desperate when I get to my computer.

Some people didn't like it, but I enjoyed it! Odd about the formatting, my Kindle edition was fine.

I tried reading Last Night At The Blue Angel and gave up after a few chapters.

I also tried reading The Museum of Extraordinary Things and gave that up after a few chapters.

Now I'm reading Iron Lake by William Kent Krueger and so far I like it. I've read about 100 pages. It's not a new book, but it's the first in a series.

Sounds like I am not alone! I was so glad it was a Kindle library loan!
