I'd rather read the book and picture it all in my head,as you all do,but different ways to each person. On 3/9/2015 Linders Back said:On 3/8/2015Epicurean said:On 3/7/2015 Troop_Angel said:He is my altimeter favorite. I don't mean to be rude, but how old are you???? I never meet anyone who never read his books. You must read East OF Eden,it's his best. I re-read every so often. It's the only book I've ever read more than once,,I tend to read certain genres for a while which recently brought me to Of Mice and Men. I was mesmerized. I had never read Steinbeck before. Now, I am reading The Grapes of Wrath. A must-read. I only regret not having read Steinbeck decades ago.
Epicurean, I see your post has fallen victim to the dreaded "Auto-correct", but I know what you mean.
We just read East of Eden for our book club last month. I have been trying to get them to read Steinbeck forever (the 6 years I've been there) and they finally agreed.
We are all 50+ years old, and I was amazed at how many had never read anything by him before. It is one of the first books we have read that everyone loved and those who hadn't read him before thanked me for being so persistent.I had read many but never this one, and agree, it is the best.
DO NOT watch the James Dean movie and think you have heard this story. The fact that they were allowed to use the title and destroy this marvelous book is an outrage. The 1980's mini-series, on the other hand, follows the book very closely and even uses Steinbeck's words and dialogue. I do recommend that. Jane Seymour is a super Cathy/Kate.
I agree that Jane Seymour was spectacular in the 1980's mini-series. What a stunning production!

You've got me interested, now. I have the book, but can't remember ever having read it. I guess that's pretty terrible, but I just don't remember it. I'm going to do it now. I also have The Red Pony by him-a short little book that I've had since childhood.

Epicurean, I must be like you. I prefer a book to the movie version. East of Eden was excellent. LM

I read Woman With A Gun (Philip Margolin) and couldn't get over how amateurish the writing was. I thought it was a high school writing project but this author has written several other books.
Also read The Good Girl (Mary Kubica). Ho hum.
Also read The Blackhouse (Peter May), which I hated. I thought it was a really, ugly story. It's the first in a trilogy.
I had Everything I Never Told You (Celeste Ng) on my Kindle but I read the reviews (dysfunctional family and discrimination plot) and I decided to pass.
Same with The One I Left Behind (Jennifer McMahon) read the reviews (serial killer of women) decided to pass.
So I am left with A Sudden Light (Garth Stein) that seems to be a family saga, and very different from The Art Of Racing In The Rain. I like the author so I actually plan to read this.

I am reading Make Them Cry by Kevin O'Brien, it's my 3rd book of his and I love his writing, he writes really good mysteries and they start off good and never let up.

Started last night Mrs. Grant and Madame Jule, Jennifer Chiaverini. As always it is outstanding. Also just barely started Prodigal Son, Danielle Steele. Not far enough into for a fair review but she has started her usual "looks great for his/her age" comments.

I can't believe I'm starting my 3rd book this month! It's Mean Streak by Sandra Brown.

Finished Unlucky 13 by James Patterson. Another ok book in this series but yet I keep reading them. Fast reading at least.
Onto Mona Simpson's Casebook.
