I too enjoyed The Girl on the Train. I've always liked "Brit chick lit" and this was sort of a dark and twisty version of that genre.
Had to give up on two well-reviewed books that did nothing for me, despite sounding promising: The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton (Amsterdam in the 1600s) and The Quick by Lauren Owen (Victorian London paranormal) both of which failed to hold my attention.
Rereading Gaudy Night by Dorothy Sayers, an oldie but goodie, to recalibrate my reading palate! After a couple of duds I like going back to a tried and true favorite.

glmama - I appreciate your comments, thanks.
I finished Five Days Left and liked it well enough. Mahalo to sunala for this rec. I enjoyed both story lines and thought the forum entries/relationships was interesting.
Now I'm reading The Rosie Effect, sequel to The Rosie Project. I love these books!

I received this book at Christmas, and found it interesting. It explains the book of Revelation.
Agents of the Apocalypse ----- "A riveting look at the Key Players of the End Times."
The author is Dr. David Jeremiah

Not sure if you meant this comment for me regarding Five Days Left. But if so, yes there are happier topics for sure. I guess the same statement could be made about books about wars, the holocaust, slavery, racism, domestic abuse, kidnapping, rape, murder, poverty, addiction, cancer etc. etc. I wouldn't want a steady diet of any of them. But to never pick up a book unless it was a happier topic? I would have missed a lot of great books and a wealth of knowledge. I can't just read about sunshine and rainbows, violins and romance, madcap comedy. I tend to mix heavier material and lighter topics and read a variety of genres. That's what this book club forum is about.
I'm sure you 'can take it', but there are certain things I just can't take, and reading about disease would never be something I'd willingly pick up to read. That's all I'm sayin'. Nothing to do with what you read, or your taste or anything. It's me, not you. I could never. I can read about war, the holocaust, murder, you name it, but not someone having a disease. It upsets me. I mean, I know these things are out there, but I don't care to read about them. There is enough around us. I read for enjoyment, stuff that lifts my heart up, like a Billie Letts book. I can read scary, scary books, too. No problem. So when I read your comment about what you were reading, I immediately thought what I wrote and before ya know it, I'd posted it. Kind of a thinking out loud thing.

I get it Judaline, no worries. If someone had just posted that they read a book filled with detailed accounts of animal abuse, I would have had the same reaction as you.
In Five Days Left, it was the female protagonist's "plan of action" so to speak that made me interested.

Oh, animal abuse, I never read about it-I will donate, I will petition, I will sign petitions, but don't show me the pictures. I know it exists. I wish every child/animal abuser in the world would be locked in a cage like a dog, and I'll do anything to get them there, but I can't read the stories and I can't look at the pictures.

I just finished Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. She was born in Nigeria. I had read her more current book Americanah and loved it so I went back to previous books of hers. Half of a Yellow Sun is regarding Biafra's struggle to try to become an independent nation. She also wrote Purple Hibiscus.

Black River by S. M. Hulse. Excellent. If you like Kent Haruf, you will enjoy this debut novel.

Just finished The Girl on the Train. We had a storm day today. It was a good quick read. LM
