Re: Were comic books ever a part of your youth?

My parents did not allow them. My Mom felt they were a waste of money, and we should read good books from the library. Every month our library would suggest books for different ages and when Mom or Dad took us to the library they would strongly suggest we pick from that list. My Dad only had a third grade education and was always struggling to be a better reader, so he really thought it was important for us to be good readers, as his lack of reading skills had held him back a lot.

Whenever we took long car rides we were allowed to get comic books, now it helped keep us from getting bored, and bothering our parents!

I attribute my reading of comic books as a child for always being a very good reader in school. I would read comic books over and over....Casper, Richie Rich, Little LuLu, Archie, Wonder Women( my favorite!)  And so many more!  I would take the flash light to bed with me and read after I was suppose to be asleep 😴 😄.

Every week when I got my allowance, I would buy a Little Lulu comic book and a sky bar and a coke at the fountain at the drug store.  God, I'm old.

@151949

Comic books were a way many very young kids learned to read and often read better than those who claimed to have read “real” books.  Often the comic book kids read well above others.

In fact, many writers of successful films tell you they were avid readers of comic books as kids.

As a kid, I read at least two entire books a day, and was given a dollar a week to also continue reading comic books.  At that time I was four years old.

Yes, my sister and I had a pile of comic books on the shelf by the tv. I would read them while I ate breakfast before school and in the car.

We we had library hour for children every Saturday. I was hooked on the Bobbsey Twins, then went to Nancy Drew and on and on.

Re: Were comic books ever a part of your youth?

I was a major Little Lulu fan, actually how I learned to read. Those were a dime each but during the holidays the Disney cartoon characters would be featured in special editions which cost a whopping $.50. Couldn’t wait for that every year.

Mad was my absolute addiction but I was in HS by then. They were always pricier than the comics of my childhood (NOT CHEAP).

I can remember fussing about whether our tiny minds were damaged by reading comics, but I always loved to read, so comics were just a small part of my reading menu.
