There have been several weather-related deaths in New Mexico this week which you'll never hear about because things happening here aren't important to the East Coast news giants.

Yesterday a father and his adult son, experienced hikers,  died in Carlsbad Caverns National Park when they set off on a short hike.  The son was just about 1 mile down the trail and the father a little further.  Both deaths heat-related.

Monday there was a sudden dust storm on IH-10 in the very Southernmost part of the state.  It caused a chain-reaction pile up with about 19 tractor trailer rigs involved, that resulted in the deaths of 6 people, including a 9 month old baby.  These storms are not uncommon along this stretch of IH-10 and every year we seems to have fatalities there.

People here in the city, even work crews, are kind of taking things easy, drinking a lot of water and resting when necessary.

Anything from Arizona or elsewhere?

Re: Weather-related Fatalities

You are right, if it doesn't fit an agenda.....

Any loss of life is tragic.

We've had loss of life here on the Gulf coast.    Cindy makes landfall sometime overnight.

So sad about father and son - what were they thinking?  I just passed a young girl running in 90 degree weather - she's on a track team and practicing.  I know her and told her to take it easy in this heat.  They think they are invincible!

Sad. But year after year we read about these senseless tragedies.. Why are people hiking in the heat?

Wait until Spring/Fall.

@Kachina624 - so true about nothing mattering to the news people unless it is on the east coast!  We can have a blizzard here in Indiana - it's not mentioned, but let them have 5 inches of snow and it's news.

@software  We've been so consumed by this heat, I didn't even know there was a tropical storm until I heard the news at noon today.  I guess everyone is bracing for the worst.  I remember those day from when I lived in Houston.  Stay safe.

Re: Weather-related Fatalities

I don't know about news reports on the hikers, in my immediate area there are several deaths every year of hikers and people falling at waterfalls that only makes local news.

The 25-vehicle pile up and resulting deaths was reported by The Associated Press and picked up by local news stations here so that story at least was important enough for "East Coast news giants" to select from the thousands of incidents they get to evaluate every day that might be of interest to a broad audience.

Sadly, Tropical Storm Cindy has caused the death of a child on the Alabama Gulf Coast.  The 10 year old boy was standing outside of the condo his family had rented, along with his father and siblings.  A large log washed ashore on a wave and hit the child in the head, killing him.  Just awful.  The family was from Missouri and  didn't realize that they were doing anything dangerous.

Re: Weather-related Fatalities

North East side checking in.....

Heat related deaths:

Children left in cars.

Seniors inside a hot house because of no air conditioner.  Fan blowing hot air.  Windows closed.

Those that have air conditioners, do not bother to turn them on because of their electric bills.

Children & adults going into the ocean after the life guards leave.  None bother to read the "warning signs" which are plastered all over the place.  All drown because of the strong ocean under currents.

Children & adults swimming in Delaware & Schuylkill rivers day or night.  All drown because of the under current.

Drunken boat drivers.

Careless boat passengers who do not wear life jackets.

And the 1st day of summer is today!!!!

Re: Weather-related Fatalities

i have heard about weather related catastrophes all over the country, every year, every season.

I don't understand the slam on the "East Coast News Giants",

That's where I've heard about them.
