We always have porcupines around our home (rural) during the year. I've taken quite a few photos of them and normally, I can walk quite close to them before they scurry off. We've had some really large ones. They live in the pine trees in our woods.
They're not aggressive unless a silly dog tries to tangle with them.
Mind you, the night I stepped off our front porch and nearly on top of one was a surprise. But it got out of the way before I could! They're quite timid.
