That's weird, cause I am in Southern California and my sister is in British Columbia..in the summer, is light LATER there, than it is here..
I guess I always thought the farther North, the longer it stayed light...

As far as I am concerned, we are getting 'close' to the change in light here in Alaska. Our shortest day in December will have the sun rise at 10:56a and set at 2:46p. We will gain one minute the day after the shortest day, and I can't wait!

Its so depressing here getting dark early and that compounded by possible nasty weather (cold & snow) to boot.
My favorite day of every year is when we start gaining more daylight. I just visited a daylight calculator website and it says for my area here in PA we start gaining more daylight starting 12/27. I always thought it was the date of the winter solstice on 12/22 guess it varies each year or may-be that website was wrong.
Yes, the added 1/2 hour of daylight was a pleasant surprise for us. I think because we are slightly further west than Pitts., and 1100 miles south.I used to hate that I went to work in the AM in the dark and came home at night in the dark when I was working. We worked 4 days a week so sometimes we would go 8 days with out ever seeing daylight. Something I love about retirement is being wakened by the sun not the alarm clock.
Yes, I vividly remember those days. Not quite as bad as yours. Leaving for work in the dark and getting home in total darkness. Gosh I hated that. DH & I worked at the same hospital and would leave our house most days at 6:15 to allow us time to stop and pick up coffee and have a few quiet moments to drink it before we entered the hospital.

@Day1128 Hi Day1128, it great to read posts from someone who lives in Alaska. Wow, only about 4 hours of daylight... Don't know if I could adjust to that. But I sure would love your extended daylight during summer. Is it really 24 hours of daylight?

We are talking about winter - in the winter the earth tilts so the sun moves south, below the equator. That is why countries in the southern hemisphere have summer weather when we have winter weather, they are tilted toward the sun and we are tilted away from it.That is also why it is dark longer every day because the northern hemisphere is tilted further away from the sun. In the summer the opposite happens.

I'm thrilled every year when we get past Dec. 21st. I don't like winter and I don't like it getting dark so early.

@jaxs mom He is so regal looking. I miss having a cat or two or three. I just can't bear losing them. Its been years since their passings and I still tear up thinking about losing them.

@Allegheny I understand, it's so hard to lose our fur babies.

@Mominohio Oh Ms Mom, I like your thought process. I was going so say the same thing actually. About 2 wks after the winter solstice, the days DO indded begin to get longer.
Ah yes, there will be another SPRING!!! We just need to be patient to get there.
