It was getting dark at 5:45 this evening and here in SW Fl. our earliest darkness will be around 5:30 on Dec 21. I always appreciated that here we get about a half hour more of daylight than we did when we lived in Pitts. where it was totally dark by 5PM and was starting to get dark at 4:30PM. Even though it is still hot here this year and still quite warm almost all winter - the darkness still disturbs me.

Where I am it will start getting dark around 4pm next month. I just hate that! Now, with it getting dark around 5pm is bad enough. But, as much as I love winter there are two things I tend to wish away - having it dark in the afternoon and the holidays.

I was just talking to a friend about the dark days. We can do a happy dance soon, knowing they will be getting longer, even thought, ever so slowly!

I didn't know you had 1/2 hour more light down in FL than here in PA.
Its so depressing here getting dark early and that compounded by possible nasty weather (cold & snow) to boot.
My favorite day of every year is when we start gaining more daylight. I just visited a daylight calculator website and it says for my area here in PA we start gaining more daylight starting 12/27. I always thought it was the date of the winter solstice on 12/22 guess it varies each year or may-be that website was wrong.

I like the dark.

We're not getting that close to it: it's around Dec. 22--several weeks away yet.

Yes, the added 1/2 hour of daylight was a pleasant surprise for us. I think because we are slightly further west than Pitts., and 1100 miles south.I used to hate that I went to work in the AM in the dark and came home at night in the dark when I was working. We worked 4 days a week so sometimes we would go 8 days with out ever seeing daylight. Something I love about retirement is being wakened by the sun not the alarm clock.

Define "close." It's still more than a month away. And we just went off daylight savings, so the long days seem very, very far away to me.
