Re: We (Finally) Took the Plunge

@Moonchilde, our house sits on a knoll and we're surrounded by lots and lots of trees.  Within the last five years, the township was fighting to put in a new cell tower but some locals objected because of an Eagle's nest.  OY!

Hello boys!  Just think of another location to put the tower.

Good luck~ I've had to block numerous calls on my cell phone. Somehow telemarketers got ahold of the number. A few of them haven't received the "message" that they're blocked and will still call. Their computers will learn-

Hi @kdgn

I will have to learn how to do that.  LOL  I 'm a PRO when it comes to the landline.

There aren't a lot of options for blocking cell calls. Most of them are robo-dialed so Do Not Call is useless. You can block the number after they call, but sometimes they have it fixed so you can't.

98% of my cell spam is robo-dialed, about which little can be done because it's so random :-(

There are all kinds of apps @Moonchilde.  Some better than others to help block calls.  A good smart phone will also enable you to block a certain amount of numbers.  I use mine like this, but I know there apps for Android for call management.

Thanks, @itiswhatitis. For now I haven't hit the ceiling number, whatever that might be on my Verizon iPhone, but if/when I do I'll definitely check out the app store.

@Moonchilde, just make sure you read the reviews for the apps!

Re: We (Finally) Took the Plunge

I still get telemarketers on my cell, my landline fee is very low so I'll continue to pay it....

Re: We (Finally) Took the Plunge

Telecommunication companies are so interested in "bundling" that most times if you choose a la carte, the costs of one service is astronomical.  After I switched the internet,, took directv out of the bundle, the cost of having he landline would be, $60.00.

Sixty dollars isn't a lot of money but I certainly don't need to pay for something I seldom use.

Re: We (Finally) Took the Plunge

I agree about the bundling/price break thing.

Now that I have all three - internet, cable tv, and landline - with Charter, I'd be willing to bet ten to one that if I cancelled the landline the price for my internet and cable tv would go up.

Right now I'm on a deal at $194 for all three.  That's pretty decent considering fast internet and we have all the cable channels, including all the Premium channels.   That's a one-year promo price and I was told it would go up by $30 after that year ends.

When I had Charter for cable tv and ATT Uverse for internet (nowhere near as fast) and landline, it was  more than my charter will be in a year when it goes up, so I saved a bunch by moving stuff.  Plus, Charter seems much better for internet than ATT Uverse was.  It was very problematic here.  I had to restart my (their) modem/router unit sometimes a couple of times a day.

Re: We (Finally) Took the Plunge

I only got rid of my landline recently.

I don't miss it at all.

I wish I had done it much sooner.

The last time a Verizon service tech came to my house he said he barely has anything to do anymore.

He was chatting and working really slowly LOL.

It took him literally 2 minutes to fix the problem but he was there 45 minutes!

Re: We (Finally) Took the Plunge

I'm surprised so many people have telemarketers, *scammers* etc. calling their house phones or their cells!

And I haven't had ONE political call.Woman Frustrated  I WANT to be polled.  LOL.

As far as Verizon, they are at 2 of our houses and it's clear calls, steady cable, and the internet is fast enough.

I can tell when someone calls from a cell sometimes, we'll get dropped.  But if they call from their house phone, I can honestly say I've never been disconnected.

I talk on my house phone a lot every day.  I talk to my parents for at least an hour and one sister for an hour every couple of days.  DH calls during his lunch when he's working.  Son calls almost every day because he's stuck in wicked traffic leaving NYC.  I'm there to *calm him*.  LOL

I do more texting than cell phone talking unless I'm driving of course, then it's over the car's speaker system.

Re: We (Finally) Took the Plunge

It so depends on where you live, and the wiring/cabling in your house and neighborhood. ATT wired my old neighborhood for U-Verse after a 5 year wait. The housing/wiring in the houses and apts was old as well as the general telephone infrastructure.  My installer direct-wired me from the telephone pole somehow so I had a pristine connection. He said if he didn't my service would suck.

I never had 1/10 the trouble or hassle with U-Verse that I had with TWC. In two years it went down exactly twice that inconvenienced me - one nationwide outage and one other time for 2-3 hrs. In two years. I had one cable box die. They told me if I had a technician bring me a new one it would be $250. The tech came, verified that the box had totally imploded and gave me a new one. I was never billed. I had zippy fast (the fastest they offered) internet.

I think it's just like cell phone service it depends on several circumstances. ATT cell service would be useless where I am now.

Re: We (Finally) Took the Plunge

Hi Moonchilde!  Oh yeah, ITA about services varying from market to market.  Here, ATT cell service (my husband has them for his cell) is pretty bad.

Before we changed our ATT phone/internet to ATT Uverse it was ok and even in some ways better.  I could walk up the street at least two houses up and be on the phone (I had to do that once on phone with UPS looking for a parcel).   But once the phone is hooked to a modem you have hardly any range.  The ATT equpment we had was pretty bad.  Until Uverse, I was pretty much fine with ATT but the Uverse here was pretty bad.

We don't have Time Warner here, but I do hear a lot of complaints about them.  We've had Charter for cable tv for as long as I can remember and, over all, they've been pretty good.  VIrtually no outages and when there has been they have been right on it.
