Queen Elizabeth was still a princess when she married Philip in 1947. It's fun to see how movie newsreels of the time covered and treated the wedding-- love the plummy voice of the narrator, who in proper Brit fashion turns "marriage" into something like "mahdage".

One thing consistent thru all the royal nuptials down through time is the lusty appreciation of assembled crowds for the glass-carriage-enclosed bridal pair! Such a sustained roar going up from the crowd-- I found it oddly moving.
Elizabeth was quite dewy and lovely, with the typical Windsor voluptuous figure. Philip as always, bluff, stoic and staggeringly handsome. There's a quick shot of Princess Margaret that shows what an extraordinary, exotic beauty she was then.
You can't underestimate how ecstatic post-war Britain was to have something like this to celebrate. After all they had been through in war, what a relief. By the way, don't miss the shot of heroic Winston Churchill and Clemmie, and the parade of European royals who turned out for the event...

What strikes me is how well and respectfully dressed the crowd along the streets was. VERY different from today!

If there is one wedding dress and veil in this life that I could own or wear it would be Queen Elizabeths. I think her gown was stunning.

Weddings always seem to get people in a "hope for the future" mood. Who would have predicted that Philip would turn into a foul mouthed womanizer over the years? I say "off with his head". JMO ![]()
