Maybe not the OP's intention, but this topic easily turns into bashing areas where many of us live. What's the point of that?

First of all, it comes only from an individual's experience or it comes from no experience other that anecdotes or it comes from one's own bias about how different areas are perceived or it comes from knowledge of only some areas in a state, etc. etc.

Yes.. a lovely city that is for sure.   oh and do watch where you step... human waste and urine is everywhere....

yes... I do live here...

You live in Seattle, and you're often shot, stabbed, or robbed? Yes, Seattle has problems, but, maybe a Wee bit (or more) of an exaggeration 😉

I've never felt in peril, visiting Seattle I know many people that live there, and yes, they're frustrated, with somewhat recent events. It's motivated them to want to be part of finding solutions.

I'm a Spokane native, so, it would be easy enough to jump on the "trash Seattle", bandwagon. It's also frustrating, to be the, it seems, overlooked #2 😉but I won't.

We moved to Washington State 28 years go and we absolutely love it.  I have lived in the PNW all my life, but Washington State is by far the most beautiful state I've ever lived in.

@haddon9  The protests were in Portland, Oregon, not Washington State. Sure, we had some very small ones, like other states, but nothing like Portland.

When people think of the PNW they always mention the rain.  Growing up in the PNW we had rain a lot, however with global warming, we don't have anywhere near the rain we used to get.  Most years now, we are way below the expected rainfall. We have gorgeous weather here.

While there is a guide to understanding the rankings, I haven't yet read it in detail, though I did note the categories... Perhaps I will, because on the face of it, I find this and so many of these 'best and worst' ditties to be pretty much of a boatload... Nothing against Washington, I suppose, but, overall, it says the rankings are based on how well the state serves their residents, and as a resident of No. 7 Virginia, I'm not so sure... Then again, it's been a while since I lived elsewhere, so have a limited basis for comparison... Regardless, if this is Top 10 service, well, let's just say I'm surprised...

Definitely not my intention.

You're in LA county?  My late sister in law, who died far too young, was from Redondo Beach.

She moved from a county, of what, 10 million or so, to very beautiful, but rural, Priest Lake, Idaho.

Talk about a change!  She and my brother, visited California often.  My brother was so, not, a lover of crowded places, but he loved visiting, and, apparently, quickly mastered Southern California driving.

No place is perfect. If such places existed, they'd be affordable, only to the very financially elite 😁

I was born in So Cal and it was a wonderful place to grow up with the beautiful weather and the beaches but too many people moved there.  As they tore all the orange groves out to build more houses and shopping centers, etc. and the weather heated up.

I chose to leave and headed to Washington State.  I purchased a house here near a large lake.  I love having the change of seasons where I live and they are mild.  It is not humid in the summer nor do we get huge snow storms in the winter.  I love it here.

Seattle does have problems of homelessness largely due to the opioid addiction and mental health.  Most large cities are going through the same thing.

We've been to 28 states and our goal is to visit all of them now that I'm retired.  We're hoping to resume our travels this summer.

Every state I've been to has had beauty in its own right.  From the sandy shores of FL to Lake Winnipesaukee in NH, to the lovely vistas in WY at Ten Sleep and the gorgeous natural arches in Utah.  We've loved it all!  As US citizens we are all so blessed to have such a diverse landscape and such a variety of weather patterns all in our own country.

DH and I live outside a small town in mostly rural PA.  I wouldn't trade living here as it suits my desire to have acreage and my animals.  There are beautiful places to ride my horses and walk my dog.  So, while I wouldn't trade where I live, I also appreciate the chances we've had to visit many other places.

I think it is so interesting to hear different views of where each live.

I especially love reading when someone loves where they live

and lists all the things about it they

enjoy. That is really a wonderful thing to have.

I've visited many states in the US.

I'm sure things change so much over time. We can never know what a place is really like til we live there for awhile.
